Finally broke off my horn earth tab...

  1. Yes, there’s not a lot of clearance but mine’s been fine since reinstating horn (bus) to steering wheel 8 yrs ago.

Agreed, that’s the same method I used last time I changed the coupler

ok looking at my underneath picture of steering box does it look like I have the through column earth tab to the wrong place ?...

My button is spring loaded, I think as per the original set up and pushing it connects it to the spade connector sticking out if the bottom. I'm not sure if my earth tab underneath the sterring box coupling is actually earthing if its not connected to one of the 2 bottom flange bolts

From what I can see in your pics, everything appears to be wired correctly, centre tube cable on one of the steering box studs.

Looks as though the button isn’t completing the ground path between side and centre column connection.

I have a similar boss, the back of my horn has a tab that touches the side wall of the boss when pressed completing the ground path.

Just a thought Ian, but is your steering wheel new or did the horn previously work?
The horn on my Baja is very similar and I had issues getting it working due to a poor connection between the button and side of the boss when the button is pressed.
It turned out to be caused by paint overspray from the factory on the inside of the boss not allowing a reliable connection. I sanded it off and have had no problems since.

The horn previously worked yeah and individual continuity checks work. All I'm left with is as you mention the horn button press surround not properly contacting the boss that it sits in. There is a small copper wrapping around the o-rings on the horn press that might not be fully conducting...

or the earth wire from the horn tab has to connect to the flange on the bottom side of the flexible coupling and not one of the bolt/nuts that hold the top side flange of the steering column. I’ll try moving the earth wire from the right to left side bolt later today…

The wire should go one of the two bolts attached to the steering box.

Its meant to be the earth for the horn, the only bit that is earth inside the steering column.

The rest of the metalwork of the column should be insulated from earth by the coupler, a plastic ring inside the floor cover , and a rubber ring at the top. That is in turn connected to the negative side of the horn.

So touching the top end of that wire anywhere metal on the column should make the circuit.

One other difference is that if you fit the needle roller bearing upgrade at the top of the column, the earth path is completed by current flowing through the bearing.. which might not be as good a path as the OG bearing and spring arrangement.

Still, wire in correct place at bottom, tap it onto the bolted on part of the wheel boss and the horn should sound.

My suspicion is that you need another wire from the horn switch going from what looks like earth on the wheel (but isnt because of wood or plastic) down to some metal bolted to the top of the column.

If the horn will not stop sounding on the other hand, there may be a piece of steel reinforced conveyor belt being used in the steering coupler instead of polymer reinforced material.. in which case, you have an interesting beer mat with four holes in it.

  8. Mine has a 4th screw on the back with a copper scraper to touch the inner boss wall. The copper wrapping not making contact is your problem.

Turns out is was my schoolboy error of not putting the centre earth tab in the bottom side of the coupling…moved it to the right place. Job done everything works as intended…

  10. It does need the bridging wire underneath, in the late ones.

  11. That new coupling looks good will get round to fitting mine at end of this season.
