Fitting a CB Performance oil breather kit to a type 4 engine on 1976 Double Cab

  1. Just bought a 1976 DC and drove 1000km without realising they had not fitted a breather pipe so had oil flying around engine bay.. doh. annoying as prior owner who sold to me had just had it serviced at a VW garage so they obviously didnt know what they were doing as they didnt ensure one was there.. f**kwits..
As I am an amateur and not mechanic I didnt realise til the engine bay was coated in oil..

So bought a CB Performance 1754 breather kit. will update the lines when i get a chance but will fit it with what came with it.
    So I have a type 4 2 l engine and twin carbs
How high up does the breather need to be and do i do the thing of drilling holes in rocker covers and let excess oil drain into valves or do i attach to the carbs or do i let it run away underneath?

As I say I am not a mechanic so please no funny comments.. just need constructive advice.

  2. mines just go the breather hose and fuel vent going into one of my air filters by drilling the cover and a fitting through it that the hose can connect onto! Think thats how most of us do it!

  3. Yep, breather hose goes into the top of the air filter on mine. I tried my best not to use a fixing that relies on any sort of nut on the inside of the air filter to hold the pipe in place. I didn't want the chance of the nut working loose and falling into the engine.

I always thought the breather boxes were a bit “snake oil”.

  5. Exactly, only really appropriate on cars that don't run air filters, but if you do fit a breather box, don't forget emptying the oily gunge out becomes an annual service item.

I think they are probably ok if the oil can run back into the engine but most are not fitted like that.
Mine just sticks through the tin aimed at the road as per a rolling road chap advised, but it doesn't detectably breath anyway - if it was puking oil I wouldn't do that out of respect to motorcyclists, I'd hook it up to aa air filter like everyone else does.

  8. Or push fit :)

  9. it has the crankcase breather there but the outlet goes nowhere , hence oil spewing out and covering engine bay.. will try the pipe hanging below the body option first and see how much oil comes out and then go for rocker cover one if oil is an issue poluting the road..
thanks to everyone for feedback.. much appreciated!

  10. so next question is where do i mount the breather box? dont want to drill into the bed as its 100% hole free and so was looking at fire wall or this bracket on the right. it should be high enough above engine on the bracket. can then run outflow pipe under the body from there or to the rocker cover if i go that route..

You don’t need a breather box. Chuck the pancake filters over snottys fence and fit proper ones then you can simply connect the crankcase breather to the filter. Don’t connect anything to the rocker covers.

  13. If it’s spewing oil out enough to cover your engine bay, please don’t vent it outside the bodywork.

This - I can't even feel a draught on the back of my hand and it definitely would not coat the engine bay with oil mist or I would not do it.

Forget the breather box, sell it on ebay if you can't return it to the supplier for a refund.

Fit proper filters first and then vent into one of those is the best way forward. Ask on this thread for details.

That breather is from a fuel injected engine, the carb version doesn’t have a PCV. The carb breather has a mesh screen to condense oil mist which then drains back into the crankcase, any remaining fumes are drawn into the air-filter and burnt. Pic from samba.

  16. thanks 77 westy.. i will look for a carb one, fit it and run the breather pipe to the air filter on the right carb and send back the bugpack breather kit.. thanks for your help.. i wonder why they fitted a FI breather? heh ho.. guess they didnt realise the difference..

thanks to everyone for your feedback.. much appreciated.. now just need to go to Customs at Nice Aeroport to declare it so i can then register it as a voiture de collection here.. what a mission!! lol.. I guess Bureaucracy is a French word after all.. lol

The engine probably isn’t original and was fuel injected before being converted to carbs. What’s the engine code on the crankcase by the breather tower (not the number on the fan shroud, although it should be the same)?

Apologies if you already know but registering it shouldn’t be a problem, these links will help: https://www.ffve.org/attestation-ffve-pour-l-ex-carte-grise-de-collection and https://www.service-public.fr/particuliers/vosdroits/F1925

Once it’s registered as ‘voiture de collection’ the CT (MOT) is every five years.

  18. cheers, have all the ffve sorted as have imported 4 veedubs in last 3 years. 2 from spain and 2 from uk. only change post brexit is cant get quitus fiscale now so have to go to customs at nice.. no dramas..
i am used to process now..
    thanks again for your help

  19. so I finally got my new breather box(well an old one I managed to get locally as the one form the UK i bought never turned up!)
Now am going to fit the breather pipe to the right hand carb filter and be done with it.
so anyone have a link in Europe where i can get the pipe, say 50mm in length and the adapter to screw to the top of the air filtre?
have found some 12mm oil pipe online at a vw parts site and an adaptor but mighjt have to wait so was wondering if anyone knew other online vw sites in europe where i can get it posted and delivered thru tracking ion next few days as want to work on the DC this weekend..
the oil breather case has a 15mm wide nozzle.
