It's that bit that goes right in the middle, you'll have to take it all apart again to fit it unfortunately.

    How big is it?

Either that or the one that goes inside the rubber boot at the back of the alternator!

All good answers. It’s deffo not a gudgeon pin, it’s a lot bigger than than that.
I think Mr @Flakey is correct - it’s this bit… part 43. Bum - think the fan has to come off again.

Unless you ended up with two and fitted one.

    IMG_2905.jpeg Well, we’re getting there.
Engine is back in and the 20-minute white knuckle ride that is the cam-burn is done. Engine seems to be running fine with no oil leaks apparent yet.

One thing I have got wrong is the fan - I can see that the steel pulley is eccentric compared to the rest of the fan despite me have meticulously measured its placement before and after I took it off for painting.

Question - So the fan has to come off again - I know this can be done in situ, but how much tinware needs to come off, and does the exhaust need to come off again to get at it?

    Looks very tidy.

Just read back through the thread. Really interesting.

You may have to remove the obvious bit of tin in front of the fan but I think not, off with the belt then the 3 bolts. I used a square to line mine up until it looked even all round, perfect first time.

Just took it out for its first very short run but seems to be running well.
Thanks Zed, that’s what I’m hoping for. Access to the screws on the heat shield will be a bit fiddly. Gonna put the tools down for a day or so to let the old grey stuff recover!

Oh - and do you mean you put a square over the pulley and measure the gap down the sides of the four legs (the ones with the long screws through) and set for the same gap all round?

I found that just removing the tinware screws ( all but the one hidden behind the exhaust). gave enough movement in the tin to get the fan out …the 3rd time in a week, it almost jumped out.

I know the feeling - I've taken it out three times since over the last week or so, but with the engine out so can't really complain.

It'd be great if I get can it out with just undoing the screws - I'll give it a go.

Exactly that. IIRC the two parts are almost exactly the same size and I was content to eyeball it.

So the engine is running and pulling nicely, although the valve train is a little noisy. Having clocked up the first 100 miles, thought I'd check the valve clearances. But getting the rocker cover off and on again has turned into a complete pig of job - the (new) bails don't go far enough down like the old ones did to clear the cover. I've had to prise the bails off the head completely with a screw driver and getting them back like that is simply no fun.

So what's wrong with this picture? IMG_2948.jpeg

    The bail is upside down.

Well that would explain it! That’s despite me referencing every photo in the manual and internet and my 914, I was pretty sure it was the right way.

I’m also suffering from brain fatigue - does the bail go up or down to get the cover off?

I’ll go and have another wrestle.

    Thanks @Zed .

Down. I can thread a rag under the middle of mine so I know it's the other way up. It is is convoluted juggle on the way in and out though. IIRC from the other day I had to lift the bail slightly as the bottom passed it so the cover could get behind it. It's tight between the tin above and the HX below isn't it?!

  19. Keep them that way up, and just turn the van upside down

    Yes, down, of course.
    Too blumin’ tight it is.
That was next in my list.

Downed tools for tonight now and will resume tomorrow after a trip to the dentist, which is only slightly less painful and expensive.
