Hi I need to change the front beam on my camper, as it's rusty and has holes in, would a beam from a 1971 fit? I've been told that one of the ball joints is on it's way out, so I might as well change all 4, what else should I be changing at the same time? How much do you think it will cost to do this work at a garage? Thanks in advance
Mine looks like Frankensteins prototype, if you have lots of cash to throw at it get a new one, as far as getting a garage to take off the old one and fit a new one I have no idea how much that will cost ?
It depends on what the garage hourly rate is but I would guess £150-£200 + vat as its about 3 or 4 hours work. Does the other beam have a servo mount?
If you get stuck and don't mind a little more welding (!) I've got a rhd beam with adjusters going cheap at the moment. http://thelatebay.com/index.php?topic=6502.0
Stick some pics up or your current beam you would be amazed at how they turn out when repaired properly not bodged
If you have the money just get an imported rust free beam - so much less faffing about - it would cost you at least as much to have yours repaired if it needs to be taken off. If it can be done in sit it's a cheap and cheerful fix - couple of hours work. As for changing the beam in 3 hours, I'm assuming this beam comes fully built up with camber and tracking set ready to go. If you want it done properly let your garage spend a day and your van might still go in a straight line.
your tracking/camber is not going to move since there your hubs etc...Don`t forget changing beam are just a matter of pulling the arms off undoing the anti roll bar and popping one track rod end...
as it left the factory , i had no need to take any thing apart , all the ball joint s a perfect as are the rubbers all sand blasted zinc primed seam sealed 2k painted , no shocks , ready to fitt cheap as chips owen nw
