Gearstick - broken? - the best?

  1. Have been told that there is a problem with our Scat shifter in our '73 by the guy doing the engine conversion. It never felt great but I assumed that it was the linkage not the shifter. A std shifter apparently works great.

Any Ideas what could be wring with our Scat one? Looks to be a simple bit of kit and wouldnt have thought it could break.

What would you guys recommend upgrading it to for the best gear selecting experience?

  2. i cant imagine the stick is broken - i have a stock stick and its works well...

  3. i know a few people that have had problems with shat shifters

Unless something is actaully broken or worn excessively then it should work absolutely fine if setup properly.

What is the actual problem with it? Why are they looking at it?

  5. Hopefully find out more details tomorrow. At the end of the day its just a ling metal stick. I cant imagine why it wont work and a stock one will. As I say it was on the vague side at best but it did work.

  6. What engine are you having put in?

    Just interested is all :)

  8. Bloody Tapatalk failed to post my reply :(

    Thanks for the information guys.

Went to see the van last night. The 1Y install looks really nice and clean. Word on the shifter is that it doent seem that the ball is deep enough to engage properly with the socket. Although there is a slot cut in the bottom it doesnt appear to be adjustable. Doesnt make sense to me. Think id rather try and get a known good aftermarket one. Any recomendations (not including CSP)

  10. Yeah sorry. its a 1Y from a mk3 golf. Saw it running last night. It was very loud. Might have to rethink the cone air filter.

  12. :D

Theres loads of exhaust. Nearly the whole of the stock mk3 length is there.

  13. The Noisekiller is on my shopping list. Also have a big box of damplifier to go in.

Hearing good things about the CSP bus shifter. If you had to choose between the Berg, Empi, Scat and CSP who would go for what?

If money was no object id go for the Berg. Not a massive fan of CSP in general (after forking out for their sh!*y stainless supercomp 'exhaust' for my Ghia), Empi is cheap and my current Scat one has broken. Or stay stock and upgrade with a locking base?

  15. Picked up the Van on Saturday. With the std shifter i cant get 1st or 2nd! Will be putting the Scat one back in tonight to see if the elusive 1 and 2 show up.

Is there a chance they have knackered my box (fnar fnar ;D ) by *****ting about with it?

  17. Cheers HorTs. I dont know that the stock one in there now has ever worked. ill dig out the haynes and give it a go

  18. sounds like your shifter coupling is kippered to me...

Either that or you've got a post 76 box in your van... shift rod needs shortening by 10mm on the locking collar
