Generator light

  1. Following on from Sir Authers battery problem , I parked the van in the garage, turned the ignition off and took the keys out, no problems at all...Some hours later I went back out to the garage and saw the generator light had come on and had given me a low battery reading. This was without the keys being in the ignition I gave it a quick check but it was getting a bit dark so I just disconnected the battery totally...You folks got any idea where I should start looking...Im going to spoil myself thought and fit the biggest battery I can squeeze in.

    Cheers :)

  2. Bump, anyone technical out there... :) Thanks to Alanred who gave me some advice on the a mahoosive battery Im waiting to shoe horn in when Ive got this little issue sorted.

  3. generator light on with key out is usually a fault at the regulator, or on the dash itself. From your alternator you'll have a plug which has 3 pins - one of these is greenyblue coloured and spurs off to your dash warning. Could be that this is loose. Or you could find that the plug needs pushing home onto the regulator, or that your regulator is fubar. Regulators for the type 4 are easy to get new and are dirt cheap from most factors.

Or, you could find you've got a loose wire on your dash - stupid question, but does the engine switch off when you switch the key off? If yes its almost certainly at the regulator end.
    :)

  4. and what sized battery are you putting on - don't go too big unless your alternator can cope with the required output. You only need what the engine needs
    :)

  5. The generator light remains on when the key is put in and the ignition is turned on. The engine clicks etc but does not turn over as the ole battery is on its last feet.

In answer to your question though, yes the engine turned of when I turned it off with the key. The light came back on after an hour or so in the garage

The new battery is a HB010 from Halfords which Alanred has got on his 2 ltr type 4 engine. Mines a Type 4 Heritage 1800 Industrial engine so it should be alright...Heres hoping anyway.

    Thanks for your thoughts ;)

  6. ...then i'd say the wiring is suspect, the alternator has had it or the regulator is. You should find out which before you put a new battery on or you'll likely knacker that. I'd give you a photo tutorial of what to look for but I don't have any wires in my engine bay so there's nothing to see
    :)

  7. a crap battery can cause this ....esp if one of cells has gone ...

  8.
  9. I'll have a look to see if anythigs loose and then put the new battery on to see if a blown cell on the old one is the cause... Thanks for the offer on the photo step by step, I would love an engine bay like yours but I'll stick with my bowl of spaghetti for the time being...I am only down the road from Ricky if your ever in this neck of the woods... ;)

  10. your bus isn't marmite brown too is it? I'll be down that way to help him out at the end of this month I think. You should get rid of all those wires though...
    :)
