getting the window out

  1. OK I'm going round all the windows and sorting out the rust. I've got new seals except for the rear hatch which was replaced only 2 years ago and looks fine to me. I'd like to reuse it if I can get it out without damaging it.

I can't apply too much pressure to the window as it's a Westfalia plastic double glazed unit.

    Has anyone successfully done this?

  2. there is a push method but doesnt always work ......you push the rubber from the inside at various places until the seal is worked out then get a screwdriver using the rounded shaft to work the rest of the unit out ..

  3. push the window at the edge while folding the rubber lip over the frame while keeping pressure on the glass to hold the seal out, use you thumb or a blunt narrow scrapper (plastic is best to avoid damage to seal) do this as far round as possisble the release the glass (plastic in your case) from the bodywork.

if you can get the van in a garage and get the garage warm for a while this will soften the rubbers and should reduce the chance of the cold plastic window fracturing :'(

You'll never find a replacement window - cut the seal and get a new one? they're not expensive.

  6. I use a bicycle tyre lever to lip the seals over, although I've never done a double glazed one.

I did have a T3 rear window break over me trying to remove it a few weeks ago, my friend was a little enthusiastic with the pulling.

  7. As it turned out I did break one of them. Sod it. I was able to weld it back together as it was only a small area along the edge and it barely shows.

I've since found where you can actually get replacements.

I didn't know you could still get double glazed windows. Tempting to do some home improvements...
