Heater Vents in Dash Top

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by popester63, Sep 5, 2012.

  1. I have been working through restoring a lot of missing gubbins with my fresh air/heating system. Somewhere along the way a padded dash top has been fitted and the heater vents covered over. A PO had connected the top of the totem pole to the fresh air vents with a lash-up involving fresh air tubing.

I have managed to source bits to restore fresh air system, albeit don't have a cable to connect up to flaps yet, but am baffled about how the hot air supply is meant to get from top of totem pole to the dash. If I look up under dash I can see where the cutouts are meant to be - is there some kind of Y piece/tubing I am missing and what do the vents look like in the dash top. Can't see any references to any of these bits on the usual suspects.

Is there hope I can get a trickle of warmth to the windscreen, or am I doomed.

The two vents in the dashtop have these left and right:

These in turn connect to a plastic manifold (dont know what the correct name is) that sits on top of the totem.

Are you looking for the bits in the links, I may have them sat in the garage, left over - I can check tomorrow if you do need them

  3. Hi Mork,

I have replaced all those bits - they are only related to the fresh air system and are not connected to the heating part (to my knowledge).

Where I am stuck is with the centre air vents. I have found these http://www.customandcommercial.com/details.aspx?id=8504&Sub_Category=1251&group=61&category=212 but don't know what is needed to connect them to the totem pole.

If I am correct, then hot air should be available either through the floor level vents or these centre dash vents, but not through the fresh air vents.

It is just one big old German puzzle :)

have you got any piccies of your set up please?

  5. I don't have any pics but the setup is complete apart from missing the centre vents.

I have a black plastic Y-piece in the top of the totem pole. Because there are no centre vents, a PO had run fresh air hose and connected up to the round vents on the front of the dash. I have not bought the centre vents so am unclear how I would connect them to the totem pole Y-piece - I assume that I would use the existing fresh air hoses as they are serviceable and just wave around disconnected behind my dash at the mo - just need to know how those hoses would physically connect to these vents http://www.customandcommercial.com/details.aspx?id=8504&Sub_Category=1251&group=61&category=212 It almost looks as if there should be some kind of coupling that sits underneath these below the dash.

Ahh I see what you mean now!

As with the bits in the link I sent you earlier, the bits you have missing are just a push fit and are held in by the dashtop but I cannot find them listed anywhere in the parts catalogues.

  7. Think I might have found what I need - looks like there are rubber tubes that go from each branch of the Y-piece and connect to the plastic vents that sit atop the dash similar to the ones that do the same for the fresh air vents at either side of the dash - it's a life of detective work with these old girls isn't it. Just need to source the bits and take another small step toward stock!

    Cheers for your help Mork.

  8. From memory, you're missing one large piece of plastic trunking. It's like a quadruple moose-horn thing. The circular end fits in the totem pole, and the four horn bits at the top fit into the two dash-top hot air vents. Have a look on the ratwell microfiche.

Try second-hand from Megabug or FBI.

  10. Perfect pic!

  11. Thanks guys, much appreciated - the picture tells it all and the mystery is solved - it is that chappie in the middle I need - I can see that there are lugs that I guess engage somehow with the vent covers on the other side of the dash. I have fitted the other bits which are just for fresh air I believe. I guess the fresh air pipe was just a bodge by a PO and can be binned.

I have the lower Y-piece that fits in the top of the totem pole so just need to pick up the 'horns' and the dash vents themselves.

    Cheers

  12. You'll need the two textured vents for the top of the dash. These have oneround vent, one oval, which push into the y-piece once its in place. The y-piece is a single moulding. That's your hot air done.

The other parts are the trunking for the fresh air from the air vent on the front of the bus.
