Here's a stupid question

  1. I can't figure out how much air to put in my damn tyres.
I used to work at a tyre and oil change joint back in the day and it was always 28-32 PSI.
Now I have a tiny yet heavy-ass bus with special reinforced tyres that require more pressure.
I have consulted my manual but it says to see the sticker on the driver's side for appropriate tyre pressure.
    This sticker is long gone.
I have read someplace that the proper pressure is something crazy like 60PSI or something. I'm not even sure. After years of installing tyres, the idea of that much pressure scares the crap outta me. I've seen tyres explode. It's a rather violent event.
Can somebody who actually knows about the proper sidewall reinforced tyres needed for a Westy please just tell me how much air to put in these b^st^rds?
I do have the reinforced tyres, so I guess they can take a lot more pressure. I just can't find a straight answer to exactly how much. Everyplace I look has a different answer!

  2. 40 psi all round for Firestone Vanhawk tyres, that does Wilma :)

  3. From VW August 1973 Instruction Manual, Operation and Data

Microbus Delivery van Ambulance Fire Truck

    Front = 30 28 30 30
    Rear, up to 3/4 load = 40 31 31 40
    Rear, fully loaded = 44 46 31 44

Personally I would go with delivery van or Firetruck dependent on your interior type

    :)

  4.
  5.
  6. surely it says on the tyre the MAX psi ????

  7.
  8. I pump mine up to 30 in the front, 44 at the rear, which are more or less stock figures. this is with standard profile 6-ply van tyres. More at the back, as it's heavy.

  9. Zed

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

With 40 in the front you'll steer round a corner in the wet and keep going straight ahead. Way too much.

  10.
  11. just checked the label on my steering column: 30 front, 46 rear. That's it.
