Actually, yes in many cases it is too much to ask. That's why best advise on an open forum really needs to be just that, separate from what a knowledgeable or 'responsible' person would think or assume. For example, best advice on gas systems is not to touch them unless you have an lpg leisure qualification but time and again folk are happy to install untested 45 year old kit in their vans and go camping Every year someone dies or becomes seriously ill through CO poisoning on the waterways. Measured fixed open ventilation is a regulated BSS requirement although I know of folk who cover up their vents as soon as the examiner has issued the certificate...coz it's draughty! Just saying and not wanting to poke you personally coz you sparkies are a feisty lot
Aye but what is the earth conductor there to do? It isn't there to carry load current so its size has little to do with that. it only ever carries leakage current which is normally restricted to milliamps and fault current which should clear prior to any circuit damage occurring (provided you got your calcs right or did it to the book.)
As previously stated, I hate T+E Armoured is usually OK, depending on size and manufacturer, but with some notable exceptions where a supplementary CPC is needed. Can't remember the last time I saw a reduced size neutral, but it used to be a thing back in the day.
You're absolutely right, and I should have been clearer in my original post and made a clearer difference between "SHOULDN'T need" and "DON'T need". As others have pointed out, always wear a belt with those braces!

@Jaysparx I plugged my camper into a modern looking set up on an expensive campsite When I plugged my socket tester in.... it beeped at me telling me they hadn't got the wiring correct at there end. Campsites don't care as much about your safety, as you should. Luckily my electric hook up had been installed correctly by someone who knew what they were doing @Dicky . Twin rcbo double pole thingy and a socket tester for extra reassurance for those of us who didn't pay enough attention in Friday afternoon physics lessons!
I remember staying on a site in France that rented out fridges. They were plugged into ordinary indoor 3 pin extensions left out in the rain. We opened ours with a stick.
That kind of thing really grinds my gears A competent sparky did your installation, and you should be able to expect that a similarly competent one did theirs. Especially since they have little or no control over what will get plugged into it. We have strict regulations and requirements that we need to meet, and installations should be properly tested and certified, but some people obviously think that saving a few quid is more important. As my old boss used to say, "if a plumber screws up, the carpets get wet. If we screw up, we go to prison!" If only everyone who picks up a screwdriver kept that in mind, we wouldn't have to worry about carrying a socket tester.
