Indicators not working

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Mavis and family, Nov 1, 2011.

  1. Hi guys n gals,

My indicators have stopped working on my 73, which is becoming a bit annoying. :(

When I indicate either left or right, I get an illumination in the instrument panel (both left and right signals are illuminated at the same time). The indicators are fed from fuse 11, which also feeds the fuel gauge, and this is working fine, although I have checked the fuse as a matter of course.

I've been round all 4 corners, and the connections all look reasonably clean and all are grounded, so a faulty earth doesn't seem to be the problem.

My initial suspicion was the relay, so I bought one from my local autoparts place, and to my dissapointment it hasn't worked and I still have the same problem.

If anyone can offer any advice or info, it would be very much appreciated.

    Cheers guys

  2. relay earth ok?

  3. Not a bad shout...I'll give it a go :)

  5. At the risk of sounding ridiculously thick, can anyone tell me where I can find the relay earth.

I have installed a new relay and I'm still getting turning signal lights on the instrument panel but no illumination to the actual indicator lights themselves.

Very confused now.......maybe it could be the indicator stalk which I believe is £130 or so. What joy!!

If you can make the dashboard link flash then I would guess it isn't the switch.

  7. Can't help I'm afraid but interested in the answers as mine blow all the time and are driving me insane. Likewise fitted new relay which has helped, generally they will work fine until just at the point you really need (like someone following you) and then it's like a disco. My indicators are fuse 12 in my box though?!

  8. the earth is the brown wire the goes to relay pin 31 (you may have to remove the fusebox 2 screws and pull away the fusebox away from the body slightly to see the wires above the relay)

  9. ps the other end of the earth feed wire should be connected to multi earth connector tab welded to the body behind the radio

  10. try spinning the fuse round a few times, if they start working remove the fuse and clean the ends of the fuse and the fuse box contacts

  11. Hi all,

After 2 days of head scratching I've managed to fix the indicators!
The problem was the original crimped connection point inside the fuse box for the relay earth, which had become brittle and wasn't providing an effective connection.

I just removed the female connection point for the number 31 pin, and re-crimped another female connector and put it back in the slot at the bottom of the fuse box, for the relay to be re-connected.

The annoying thing is, I did check this connection against the chassis yesterday, and I got a decent reading so I dismissed it as a possibility. I only re-checked it today as I was convinced it was relay related, and I was clutching at straws a bit. I got a really high resistance reading on my meter and when I had a pull about of it, it came away without much of a fight. Re-crimped and re-connected and all was good.

An absolutely frustrating couple of days, but a really good learning curve which should do me good for when similar things happen.....which they will.

Thanks to all for your help :)
