The 'like for like' engine change bit doesn't have to mean 'exactly the same'.... in case you didn't know already, there are two types of VW engine from the era of our Bays: the Type 1 and the Type 4; the Type 1 tends to start life as a 1600cc, but it's not uncommon for it to be 'uprated' to a 1641cc, a 1776cc (as mine is), and even bigger than this. It's not classed as a modification for MOT purposes. The Type 4 came in 3 different sizes as standard: 1700cc, 1800cc and 2L... again, the 2L version sometimes gets it's cylinders etc increased to a larger capacity. All these engines wouldn't (shouldn't) count as a modification, no matter what was in there to start with - they are all from the correct era and right for a VW T2.
I think the 'modified' clause that necessitates an MOT probably relates to a conversion to water-cooled Suburu engines, or I think there's a couple of folk on here who have managed to squeeze a VW diesel engine in the back, and if you decided that the weight of a 2 ton brick-shaped bus wasn't enough and you wanted to fill the cargo area with batteries for an EV conversion... that kind of thing :) (I'm sure someone will be along shortly to correct me if I'm wrong!)

  2. Is it far? If not go along anyway, leave your cheque book at home ;)

You need to develop patience, get along to a couple of VW shows and see what's what before you buy, there's lots of chancers out there :hattip:

  3. She has not asked for a deposit no.

Following your comment @3901mick I have just looked again on the Government "check if a vehicle is taxed" and it still says "not taxed".

She has not been able to confirm the historical vehicle status and she hasn't gone back home and wont be till late.

So I have just messaged her to postpone tomorrow's viewing, whilst she confirms the historical vehicle status, the current mileage on the new engine, and whether she did manage to fully process the car tax renewal (with zero to pay) as its still showing untaxed on the website.

    Thanks for your help

  4. I’d be more worried about the structural rust tbh - esp as it was quite a while ago!

    Good luck

  5. Pop the vrm into askmid. If it's not insured it can't be taxed.

  6. Please take your time over this purchase, it's winter, you will use it now, but perhaps not as much as you would have in summer, you won't be missing many festivals or campouts right now.

Spring will bring an uplift in asking prices, it's only natural, but there's plenty of time before spring is sprung and plenty of VWs for you to look at before prices rise again:thumbsup:

When I bought mine about 2 years ago, I had a long list of more than 20 vans drawn from adverts, spoke to or emailed half the owners and looked at 4 or 5 before I found the one I wanted.

  8. I bought the first one I saw and now I am doing a full restoration on it with no prior experience. IMG_0377.jpeg

  9. I would not buy a vehicle without a recent MOT and do not be fobbed off with some excuse about MOT exemption. Reading between the lines, I reckon the van has been off the road probably sorn'ed hence not showing up as taxed. We are in 2021 now and all Bay vans should be Historic Vehicle status shown on the V5C document.

My gut feeling is the van has some major faults and the owner is desperate to sell it quick hence the big price drop to 13k which even so is a lot of money to lose if it turns out to be a dud. What is the vehicle registration number? You should know you can view Mot history which would tell you a lot about the van faults and when it was last tested. Google mot history for the government link to the website.

    Walk away from this one.

As said, spend time on here getting advice and maybe meeting a member or two to view their vans and learn about them.

We are coming into winter and best for you to wait until next Spring to have a look around and go to a few shows. Do lots of viewings.

  10. Take your time and take someone with experience in old vehicles to give you a second option, hard earned money is hard to come by and easy too loose, plenty of them about, imports can be bought for that kind of money 13k is not a small amount nearly 4 years since last mot rust can soon turn to rot. Good luck.

    Welcome to the forum.

Some great advice from the guys on here, don’t rush into buying the first bus you see on a whim.

Ive just had quick look on eBay and Auto Trader have come up with some nice buses which should state historic vehicle already as they are road going so that will take a worry off you.

Set a sensible budget and look at the various models, Microbus, Devon, Viking, Westfalia as each one offers something different to the next.

If you do see a potential purchase, post pics up for second opinions, talk to us, someone may be close enough to view with you and offer sound advice.

    Good luck!

  12. @AmandaC can you post the pictures of the first one you were looking at.

  13. Do you know the registration number? I can tell you when it was last taxed an MOTD etc

This is what comes up on govt web site when I check against my camper registration for tax and mot. I don’t pay anything to tax it but still have to notify dvla as with a normal car tax.

  15. You can get loads more detail on the app, it even tells me what it failed on. This is my daughters car, I can click on each Mot to get the details and advisories. So for example, if each year the car your thinking of buying failed on corrosion, then it is worth avoiding.

  16. Just tell the post office staff its an historic vehicle, they stamp and do the rest. They are quite busy doing pensions and parcels. Small post-office with what you know about tax exemption and a smile. Did it for me. Easy. tax/mot/ulez exempt. Thornton heath pond.

  17. Although if you intend to rent your beautiful machine out then you shall have to pay tax, get that MOT, pay tax on your earnings etc, mr small business man you.
