   would it be better if i connected the mains earth to the van chassis on its own bolt?

   as long as your incomming mains earth is connected to the metal work of your bus and is making a good connection then anywhere should be fine. Giving it, its own stud is good, I'd avoid using an earth that your 12V is connected to but its not essential
