Anybody got experience of using 3M trim masking tape on a windscreen? There's a You Tube video of it being used on a modern bonded screen at 3M Masking Rubber Trims Will it work on an older type rubber seal and what width do I need? What's the alternative?
If you don't want to remove the rubbers then you could hold them away from the paint work with cord or piping then mask. That way you would get paint beneath the rubber. Removing the rubbers and windows then masking is the proper route of course.
I guess it'll be a bit more difficult getting the trim between the rubber and the bodywork on a bay screen. Might be best to just take the screen out. Atleast then you know everything has had a decent coat of paint.
I'm reluctant to pull the screen out right now. It was out only a couple of years back and had a little bit of welding done so I know it's OK, but I've now gone round the rest of the windows and I just want to make the paint match. I'll try it with some cord as suggested - many thanks for the idea HorTs.
you will need to key the paint under the seal or the new paint will just peel off. if it just a local reair to one corner then you should be ok. if you are painting a decent amount then dont cut corners and just get the glass out. it will be worth it in the end.
if the screen has no cracks it should come out ok.I find refitting is easier than removing.Use waxoly to lube and I used single core cable to string it in.
yea waxoyl not waxoly around the apeture and rubber, string it in whacking it with the flat of your hand then wipe off the excess.I have had mine out a couple of times quite easy really, you just need assistance so it does not end up on the floor.
I knew I had use something and I know it's not washing up liquid cos that makes em rot but worth knowing when you ve got a whole van to glaze in a few weeks
