Bit of well needed maintenance on the old girl this afternoon... booked in for tires and tracking on friday, so thought I'd best get the top mounts, and wishbone rear bushes done!! Bit mucky Yep, those needed doing Nice upgrade, stock Audi TT/ MK4 Golf bushes I'm currently in the middle of porting the head, but it's a fair bit of work as they are pretty rough cast in the exhaust ports!! getting there tho 8)
Hi Paul, good work and interesting upgrade to the wishbones, i remember changing the complete wishbones almost every mot! I picked up my GTD a week ago and given it a service and spent a few hours replacing the door membranes because the card was getting damp inside. The front end needs a tidy up and I'm on the lookout for a red os wing. Very pleased with it so far You previously mentioned a rev counter. What are your plans? There is one on ebay at the min but seems too expensive at £80 delivered? Cheers.
Cheers dude... spotted the TT upgrade on club GTi recently!! Mine came with the std clock option speedo But it also had all of the W terminal wiring on the alt... so I picked up a diesel rev counter unit and plugged it in Slightly damaged screen, but you don't notice it when you're driving I've seen the one on ebay, and it is very clean... I've seen one as tidy as that go for £60+post... so it's not too much more (although I wouldn't pay that for one) you can also mod a petrol one... there is a how to on vwdiesel.net
How's your GTD coming along? I'm well pleased with mine, 55mpg over 5 tanks so far. Will post up some pics soon. Done lots of odd jobs to it like fix the rear wiper, heated screen, stereo wiring etc. It's a bit less depressing working on this over the camper I'm collecting bits for a summer rebuild as it currently has a wing sprayed by a blind man and a rattle can!
New engine is on hold due to a lack of spare cash But driving home last nigh my rev counter started having a wobbly, so I pulled over to find a load of oil everywhere Broken front mount On closer inspection, it looks like there is a bit missing (rusty straight edge) As my syncro is engineless atm, I went and robbed the one from that.... Yep, it has an extra lug on it!! So for some mad reason the PO had chopped a integral part off the engine mount... like so many other things on this car, I'm totally not surprised!!
I finally got to ordering my new bearings for the motor!! Mains turned up in double quick time so I decided to get it started on... My engine has now eclipsed 200,000 miles, and it's not "feeling" too healthy any more... a bit jerky sometimes New big ends should be here in about 3 weeks time, and the intermediate shaft bearings here next week I'll be glad to get this done and in... might start seeing some decent fuel economy again!!
Bit more done... What you can't see, is that I've got the rods and pistons in... Had to get new little ends for the rods, ream them to 24mm!! Plus fit new stretch bolts to the rods too!! Sump pan on!! Checking piston height so I can get the correct thickness head gasket Got the expensive bits to order next!! A set of ARP head clamping studs... £180 But it will stop the increased boost pressure lifting the head and spitting the head gasket out!!
Since the clutch blew out, and I had my hernia op, I've not driven my golf But I took the opportunity to rebuild the new box that I'd got for it a couple of years ago The current box, according to the code, is a GTi box, so the ratios are all wrong for a diesel motor - Especially when it gets into 4th/5th, so I picked up a 1.6 driver box, as it has better ratios @Top Banana Racing now this is what you call a jigsaw - especially as it was over 2 years ago that I took it to bits And finally back together @paradox will be proud, as I'm currently painting the box before it goes back in
I'm loving that I'll quaife the diff in the syncro The GTD is my daily, I'm just doing some basic upgrades into it
I want a pic of it curing in front of the fire Cheers for pulling my attention to this paul Its inspired me to start a thread on the *******rat
Warm enough for it to cure off in the shed Needs another coat now, I'll get that on and take a pic Spotted the rat thread too
Started pulling the old girl to bits... time for a tidy up before the new engine and box go in!! Gonna drop a new wing on... this is a repro one, that the PO decided didn't need painting on the inside... so it's rotting from the inside out New drivers door is going to have to go on too... Just got to pull the driveshafts, and the engine and box can come out
So the engine and box are out... And I pulled the box to see how badly the clutch had broken Proper broken
