  1. On order, 18 week delivery due to China still sucking up all the DSG

    I've opted for meteor grey.

The XDS+ system in this motor is out of this world

    Can't wait

Looks nice but what is it and what's XDS and what's DSG got to do with it?

  5. You clearly have more money than sense taste;)

    DSG = Direct Shift Gearbox
I looked at Audis last time I changed mine but decided against it in the end.

I suppose all being VAG they all look the same!

  10. Almost bought an A4 avant in January but as I don't have kids or a feck off big hound thought it was silly and got something else.

  11. Company car so I just pay out of my tax...

Its a Skoda Octavia VRS 2.0 CRTDi DSG to be precise. 183bhp and 280lb ft of tourques.
    :)

DSG = Direct Shift Gearbox. It is the smoothest zero lag gearbox ever with lightening fast shifts. It has flappy paddles but they're just for fun as you can't beat the speed of the cars brain

XDS+ is an electronic differential lock, it basically brakes the inside wheels when cornering so you get dragged around as if on rails. Pretty awesome in such a cheap car.

My current one goes like stink and handles like a dream but is positively agricultural when compared to the new model. Only once have I ever broken traction in my car, 2 weeks ago on 3" deep farm mud on the Worcester road when I was going a tad too quick. The computer soon sorted me out, as the current car setup is already quite sophisticated. But the new one, it's a massive step up. :)

I've driven the comparable golf, nice but too small and too boy racer. I've driven the comparable LEON, too small and too jazzy in the cabin, and very noisy. The Audi A3 is too fat, too small and too 'poor mans Audi' the comparable A4 is only available to me as a saloon and is too fat, too big and too heavy to be any kind of fun.

So all in I choose to keep the Skoda, its big enough, cheap enough, fun enough, fast enough and economical enough. If you're going to go 'poor mans' anything may as well stay at the bottom.

I might even buy my old outgoing car as I like it that much.

What's the company car tax on it?

  13. 20/21/23% years 1/2/3 . I think the base VRS model is £26k. I think the only options I specified were the colour and iPhone interface.

Its *****ed up that our government charges a higher tax for driving a more efficient and less polluting diesel. Its emissions are only 129g/100km which is pretty damn good considering its size and performance. It's longer, wider, lower, higher output/performance 25% lighter, more room inside, better spec all round, more efficient and less polluting than the outgoing model. Skoda claim 62mpg, though I'll never get close to that.

I've got to change mine next year.
Unless anyone else has made huge emissions improvements I'll stay BMW purely for cheapness. I do no miles anyway!

  15. I like the look of beemers but I feel really claustrophobic in the cabin of a 3 series and the 5 is too big a tank. First thing I'll do on mine though will be switch off the stop/start ***** and the soundaktor.

The Stop / Start in mine is generally turned off.
You must be a big fecker then? My 3 series is lovely.

  17. Well, I'm not huge...

I just feel hemmed in. Another reason I don't have a golf GTI. I love the way they drive, it's like driving a gokart and the petrol engines are just awesome, but it just feels too tiny. Considering the Octavia is actually the same floor pan the actual driving experience isn't that different even with the huge difference in wheelbase, but it just feels so much roomier in the cabin for the driver. That and the act I've had nothing but Octavia's now since 2006, I'm jut used to them. Like an old pair of slippers
    :)

  18. Hi Joker, seriously considering one of these as I'm looking for something a bit bigger/more practical to replace my Scirocco now that we are back to being a one car family. The specs look great and I've read some really good reviews, but it's always good to hear someone's "real world" experiences of ownership.

  19. This is my new ride as of tomorrow!

  20. I got a thing for Audi's too but never owned one.
Thinking of an A4 allroad with the 3.0TDI motor as my next car but no rush as my Subie is fine, trying to stay in the boxer zone as long as possible.
