New Vintage Speed Exhaust ..... Disaster .... Too Hot ~ Any Ideas?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Jude 33, Aug 24, 2019.

  1. Hello,

A very mixed day today.... we got our new engine fitted today 1776 - along with the new vintage speed exhaust.
Fantastic, have waited weeks for this to come together.....

Our first short drive (10 miles max - low revs as running in)
When we got home went to look at engine..... The Chrome bumper was 'hot' like hot to the touch!!
Really surprised - does not seem right.

Just done on-line checks & apparently it is a common problem... some people say use heat wrap?!!

    Any ideas / suggestions.....

    Thanks, Jude & John

  2. Any pics of how it’s mounted and what shape it is? Is it just a four-into-one?

  3. Surely all exhausts get very hot ?

  4. Too hot or hot?
A vs exhaust is a big lump of stainless it will warm up your bumper it’s just transferring heat
    No worries ....onward :)

Those exhausts do get crazy hot, like melt your skin hot, most exhausts do but they are hidden a little more, sounds normal to me

Is low revs the way aircooled engines are best run in?

I thought driving as normal, not labouring it, not revving the nuts off it was the way to run stuff in?

Pretty sure low revs isn’t how you run one in.

  8. Normal driving, no lugging. That’s it. Low revs will knacker it. After a while, a few blasts up the motorway to loosen things up.

  9. may try some heat wrap on exhaust as tin wear over exhaust pipe got real hot

  10. yea it warmed bumper up it was hot to touch thing is dont want tin wear paint bubling as colour matched to van

  11. Our stock exhaust on a 2ltr will burn you if you touch it.. I think all exhausts get hot that's why they put a shield in..although ours is missing and so far paint on bumper ok. and breaking in as above accelerate and decorate on the engine like normal driving but not ragging or lugging it

My rear bumper gets very hot and that’s with a standard exhaust and heat shield fitted. Probably normal. Tin ware works best at keeping engine cool if it’s satin black. Chrome or light colours are the worst.

Not the same exhaust but my chrome exhaust make my bumper very hot, is it very close to the bumper? Don't worry drive it and enjoy your new engine:thumbsup:

  16. That's just going to hold more heat in the exhaust so you're solving nothing .
Exhausts get hot , it's their job and they need the airflow to help cooling .
Exhaust wrap is used for completely different reasons to the issues you're looking at ...

One thing is that new engines do run hotter as they are stiffer...but.

My single quiet pack still bubbles the paint on the rear valance. The engine throws out air past the bumper at about 100 deg C which then gets heated further by the exhaust.

Another evil of having an aftermarket exhaust is that the pipes often run only a couple of mm below the engine bay tinware.

Its why my rear apron tinware is painted stock black and is not a piece of art, it reaches about 80 degrees C above the top pipes on the header, and there are marks where it has touched metal to metal underneath with vibration. Its also a bit rusty because the paint keeps coming off underneath.. it also shredded exhaust wrap when I tried it..

Drive with higher RPM , cooling is basically proprtional to RPM , all my running in instructions said was not to exceed 50 mph.. Driving a new stiffer and therefore hotter running engine hot at low RPM may be a good way to rapidly wear bearings.

  18. I stuck some heat wrap on the underside of the rear tin above the exhaust, not on the exhaust itself.

Engines are more expensive than paint, I wouldn’t wrap the exhaust box
