NOS type 4 case

  1. Virgin Type 4 case needed a bit of love . Not sure if it’s poor casting or damage sustained in its 30 years of storage but it’s now welded . [​IMG]

    It was probably stored as damaged in the expectation that it would in fact become worth more than the cost of welding it at some point.

    Interesting that aluminium AlSi12 alloy its 12% silicon - about 15% stronger than magnesium alloys AS41 and AS21.
    But you can only stretch it 1% before it breaks- all that silicon ..

    AS41 can take about 6% and AS21 takes about 12% stretch before it breaks.
    That probably explains why T4 cases hold their dimensions or bits snap off them while older T1 engine cases just flow away from being hammered.
