Oil smells a little petrolly?

  1. Hi All

My oil smells a bit well petrolly? I changed it for this reason (im not using the van yet its in the workshop) last week and i thought the old fuel pump may have been the cause so i swopped it for rhe later sealed type, anyway after dipping the oil tonight after timing the engine i'm worried i can still smell petrol in it? now this might be residue left from last time or there may be another problem? i checked things over and found the shut off valve on the carb was loose so i tightened that and checked connections to it. i suspect the carbs set a little rich because when i changed my plugs they were very sooty but like i said its in the workshop so is on choke alot! after timiming it tonight it revs so much better as i set it with a stobe but what else should i look for? i do need to check the tappets one more time when its cold as they are a little noisy , should i drain it and refresh again now i dont want to risk damage. many thanks for any advice.

  2. Whip the top of the carb and check the fuel float isnt sticking then remove the float valve and try and blow through it with the pin pressed in
You shouldent be able to blow through it with the pin pressed but should be able to when its released

  3. I always find a good crankcase explosion really sets me up for the day ;)...

  4. cheery b****r :))

  5. Thanks very much i'll check the float tommorow, explosions :arrggh: why is it when you fix one thing something else along the line go's wrong! battery wasn't charging so i changed the regulator and cured that then the starter motor decided to start sticking! it must have felt left out as i've relaced everything else! is the carb float valve the most likely cause of fuel getting in the oil? could the shut off valve being loose let fuel through after switch off? thanks again.

  6. Had the same prob myself, sump full of petrol oil mixture.

Fault was as Paradox has said , Floats not closing off, i had to do a bend jobby to sort it.

  7. "What doesn't kill you, makes you stronger" I believe Mr Nietsche said. He obviously didn't own an old VW bus... :(

Check your float valve, anyway: it's a poss. Assume the diaphragm in the new pump is ok?

  8. I think so, this has happened twice now, after the first time i was having trouble with the carb so i swapped it with a spare and changed the oil , then i noticed it again so swapped the fuel pump with a spare sealed one, i'm wondering if im just smelling the residue?

the valve that s in the base of the carb shuts fuel off doesn't it? like i said it was loose but i'll check the float as well, thanks everyone

  9. The cutoff valve shuts off the idle circuit, but likely won't be the prob. You need to take the top off the carb and check the float valve that lives under the lid.

  10. tommorows job, ta

  11. Two things do this faulty fuel pump allowing fuel to gravity syphon into the carb and over coming the float valve most noticiable on a slope

    or

Stuck float or unservicable float valve

No fuel goes passed the cut off solonoid unless the pump is running

If im wrong ill gladly be corrected so i dont spread any missinformation because theres too much of it on the interweb

  12. Another cause could be over rich mixture? in your thread about your plugs http://thelatebay.com/index.php?topic=11207.0 yours are fairly black, I think a little petrol can get washed down the bores. this will be made worse if you do short journeys and/or you dont have a thermostat, any residual petrol should evaporate off when the oil gets up to temperature.

  13. I've checked the Carb and the float is nice and free and i've checked the float valve and that works ok. Drained the oil and it looks black and tainted with petrol smell but the level hadn't gone up on the dipstick, i'm wondering if there was enough old oil/petrol mixture from previously (before i changed fuel pump) trapped in the oil cooler/ galleries to contaminate this oil? or its over rich, i've not been able to run it to get a true indication on the plugs to see yet but theres no smoke from the exhaust what so ever. i'll put some fresh oil in and see what happens. thanks for all your input.

i forgot to mention the timing was a little out so i corrected that and i'll double check valve tappet clearances.

  14. Give it a go with fresh oil. May well be ok.
