OT butane question

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Mr Apollo, Jun 24, 2024.

  1. I'm back in Blighty to sort out my late sister's flat. I've found two large 15kg butane bottles. One appears empty, one maybe half full. No idea what she was doing with them, or how old they are. There are no obvious gas appliances or bbqs, etc. Any ideas what I can do with them? Will a Calor gas dealer take them? Is there likely to be a deposit on the bottles? I need to have the place empty by Saturday, and I can't take them back through the tunnel. I've only exchanged much smaller bottles at campsites in the past. I did rent a flat above a pub in the 80s that had a similar sized bottle running the cooker and hob.

    Our local tip takes them.

Whatever you do, don’t put them in a crappy old car and leave it in an airport or train station car park.

Calor depot will take them and may give a deposit (or part of) back even if you don't have any paperwork.

  4. I'd be surprised if they'd give anything back, the recent debacle over withdrawal the 4.5kg they said would only return monies where paperwork was present.

As @paradox noted. Sorry for your loss, I’m afraid I got lost in thinking about the gas bottle.

I would try a local tip first though maybe depends where your sister was, if it’s rural maybe locals will know what to do with it?

  9. Depending on the area you may find they will just disappear if you accidentally left them outside overnight;)
I very much doubt you would get any deposit back without the original paperwork.

  10. Thanks for the feedback and kind words. In the end I dropped them off at a local Calor gas dealer. As expected no paperwork, no deposit. I thought one of them was in pretty poor condition, until I saw some of the others at the depot. One looked like it had barnacles on it, which is unusual in South London.
