Overheating

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Skye van, Apr 8, 2012.

  1. I need some advice and help on the way forward for me, travelled about 40 miles , slightly popping at start at higher revs, then settled as up to temperature ( have a VDO worry gauge) just below 350 f we had our lunch at cafe and then started off again, all oKish then worry gauge went up to 660 f and she was running rough, left to cool down nothing obvious, still turns over and starts , but rapidly goes up to 600f

Engine is a 1641 TP with scat cam and twin 34 ICT's with pertronix and 009

Burnt valve ? timing seemed OK checked on strobe, balance and idle OK

    Cheers

  2. check your oil level first. Check the gauge connections.

Obviously you know that your van shouldn't be popping and backfiring so you need to check all the obvious causes of that, inlet manifolds/boots/exhaust/vacuum hoses etc etc.

If the gauge temperature is correct then continuing to start the van 'just to check' and watching the gauge go up isn't doing the engine any favours at all
    :)

  3. Those temps are crazy. Is this an oil temp gauge?

  4. Try resetting the valves, perhaps tightening up as it heats until she's to tight. Or/ Could it be a block of the oil cooler some where, heating oil and then the motor?

  5. If it really got that hot, I'd be tempted to check for pulled studs in the crankcase. Has it got oil in?

  6. would guess these temps are cht ? ain't got anything stuck in the fanhouse ?

  7. do you have all your tin wear, flaps ETC ?

  8.
  9. Cheers

Yep CHT temperatures, plenty of oil, all the tinware is there, oil temp has also gone up

Will have a thorough check tomorrow if not raining if all the other suggestions, I will look in the doghouse tin for anything that has blocked it

Could this be a burned out valve ?

i had the same problem a while back due to missing tin although not as high as yours..... i used to sit at 380-420 and it now sits at 300-350 max and it runs a lot smoother, if you have only just had this happen then something may have fell off or jammed? i have no flaps or thermostat on mine.

  11. Doh...... I have learnt a hard lesson, never ever leave kitchen towel in the engine bay after checking the oil,

dropped the engine and the fan was part covered in paper towel,

Question is whether I check the heads or take the gamble that all is OK ?? given that overheating was 10 mins worth ?

Now found cranshaft oil seal leaking so not all bad dropping the engine

take the risk, can't do anymore damage can it? mine ran hot for ages before i sorted it.

Did it not sound different when you revved it?? I had one come infill owing a breakdown and the owner said prior to this it sounded like it had a cold :) I noticed it because it was lacking its cute Herbie whistle. Turned out to be a tissue in the fan.

To be honest you won't really know if there is any damage done as such as you said it starts and does everything right except over heat but I would check compression and change the oil. And also that the cooling flaps open and cool air can move freely around.

  15. Guess why i thought of this :)

  16. Cheers guys, will take the chance after checking valve clearances and fresh oil in back it goes ?
