Petrol tank

  1. Evening all,

I've a 76 westy import with a 2.0l engine. Any idea what kind of mpg I should be getting? Also how big is the petrol tank? Not sure if this is a common fault but the petrol gauge is unreliable ;)

so need to think about how many miles I should be doing before needing to fill up.

    i'm a 78 westy 2 litre
14.6 us gallon tank, 12 imperial gallons, 55 litres
i get 18-20 mpg tatting about and about 24 on a run, but i'm an auto.

I'd work on 20mpg - seems to be about average.

  4. You could, of course, fix your fuel gauge :)...

My fuel gauge seems ok but I don't have too much faith in it as it nears empty so I fill up after 200 miles or thereabouts.

usually in older cars like these, fuel ingress into the float making it weigh more and register low, or resistance in the sender electrickery bits and bobs that the arm moves up and down.

  8. Fuel tanks should hold 55 litres, which should give 370 kilometres (You said imported so assume you have a odometer in Kilometres).

I used this method for years until I cut a hatch and repaired my sender... Had the hatch cut, repaired and hatch back within 45 minutes..

Wish I'd done it years ago...

  11. fuel gauges are common for failing on lates. i had 3x fuel gauges in my old79 as i kept buying them as working and the all had burnt out wiring on the bi metalic strip inside :'( ended up using a seperate vdo under the dash
