With the rear drum brake adjustment, which way do you move the star adjuster? And is it the same way on both sides?

Imagine the adjuster is a nut and bolt with the star as the nut. Looking at the back of the backplate the right hand star goes up to tighten and the left goes down; it’s the same both sides.

    That's what I thought...but wasn't 100% certain

My brake adjusting kit includes a nut and bolt, so that when I’m underneath, I can double check .

Just rotate the wheel you’ll soon know if it’s getting looser or tighter

It is confusing ...i painted little red arrows on the back plate pointing to Adjust Up only . As i am slightly Dyslexic it works for me .

  7. The Haynes manual has a foolproof diagram , I refer to said foolproof diagram every time - and I mean everytime !!

And do rotate the wheel half a turn looking for the binding/rubbing.. if your brake drum is warped, the rubbing may stop completely or the rubbing may turn into a stop part way round. If it does, new drums time.
Unless its the wheel bearings are shot. In which case bad luck.

If you think of the star adjuster as a bottle top and the shank is the bottle, you’re tightening the top to tighten the brakes … if that makes sense

  11. Hand brake many clicks is a handy reminder to have a look.

How many clicks should it be?
The first time I used my double cab handbrake was a proper test, and it didn't do the job. My mother-in-law lives on a steep Welsh hill. As much as I heaved on the handbrake, she still rolled slowly forward. Luckily, she's an auto, and I stuck her in Park and turned the wheel into the kerb and, for good measure, stuck a brick under the back wheel

    I believe it’s 6 clicks

If you get it right, it will hold on a 1 in 3 hill with about 6 clicks. I used to have to do handbrake adjustments before visiting Bristol. As otherwise the handle would be out so far I could not find first gear without putting my foot on the brake and clutch, release the handbrake and then engage first, then put the handbrake back on for the hill start...

You are lucky to have the automatic with the transmission lock for Park..

  17. After 6 clicks, your handbrake should be as tight as a Yorkshireman's wallet
