Red Generator light stays on when engine is started and ticking over

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by robyip, Dec 31, 2011.

  1. Hi,

Does anyone know why the generator light would stay on after the engine starts and is running and ticking over fine?

    Thanks,

    Rob

  2. Worn brushes or regulator faulty. Test output and make sure all connections are good

  3. Does it stay on regardless of engine speed or only at tickover? Either way check the dynamo brushes for ease of movement in the brush boxes and of course they are making good contact with the commutator. Whilst you are at it check that the commutator is overall a dark brown colour. There shouldn't be any signs of burn marks either. If you find the comm is burnt then its probably faulty...either that or one of the brushes hasn't been making proper contact and the contact surface of it will also be pitted and burnt. If it all looks hunky dorey then the Regulator will be the source of the problem

Edit: Sorry AB my typing speed is slower than yours.

  4. Yes it stays on regardless of engine speed!

Is it a generator or alternator?

  7. Has this just happened after a long period without starting the engine ?
The contacts INSIDE the regulator can corrode up. If you DO decide to open up the reg and clean them off, be sure to disconnect the battery first.

  8. thanks for the replies re :alex rob will be back when he has freed himself from the lego mountain that our house has become over christmas.

  9. Just escaped from tidying said lego mountain!

    It's a dynamo/generator not an alternator.

Are the current suggestions something that can be done without taking the dynamo off it's mounting? As far as I'm aware from what our mechanic has told us taking dynamo off is an engine out job!

Are there any tools I would need?

As you can probably deduce from my naive questions, I've never worked on a car/bus apart from watching my brother do stuff on his car and other simple things like change bulbs, wipers, wheels etc. So really simple stuff. So please forgive me if I'm asking questions which seems out of character to the experts on this forum.

    Happy New Year! :)

  10. I've just noticed that I wrote generator light but in the post body dynamo/generator. That's because it says generator in the manual and our mechanic/GSF call it a dynamo.

    Thanks!

You can get the generator out without taking the engine out but its a bit fiddly.

If you have checked the belt tension and all the connections are tight

Have a go at this but as the generator is still in the van run the engine rather than using a drill.

  12. I feel quite silly... I ran Alex to Matt at Autohausdoly who installed the generator and before I got off the drive the light went off, it turned out to be a dis-charged battery and the belt was slightly loose!

    Thanks everyone for your advice.

    Rob.
