Removing the engine?

  1. Theres no thread for this that I can find. Please redirect me if I am just too dumb to see the wood for the trees. :headscratch2:

I'd like to take the engine out sometime. Ive a few jobs I'd like to do. One being the fuel sensor. The other being the fuel lines. And another just being nosey. Now normally I would just jump straight into it and discover stuff as I go along. However as this forum is here and I am sitting at home watching paralympics I thought I'd ask.

I have plenty of tools. BUT I dont have a high lift jack. I can get one of those. Feel free to recommend one for engine removal. Plus any other handy tools I might not have yet. I have axle stands and a pair of ramps. My jack is just a 2t low one. I would be doing it outside on hard standing. I would then cart the engine to my adjacent garage.

I am not averse to oily mitts and am fairly competant and used to working on stuff. But not VW T2's. I am an engine out virgin. :bag:

So how do you get the lump out once its all disconnected? High lift jack under engine, lower engine. But then do you wobble the engine off the jack and then jack up the bus in which case a little tray on wheels for the engine to sit on to pull it out? Or once bus is jacked up you jack engine back up and use jack to trolley out? Whaddya do?

Anyone smug with vehicle lifts, and double height garages can get lost. :buttkick:

  2. If I can remember. We put a jack under the gear box to support that and one under the engine to lower once bolts etc undone.Need to remember as got to get my engine out shortly.

I jack them up half way, then undo everything and pull the engine out.
Lower onto blocks - it'll be fine balanced on the heat exchangers
Pull out jack and jack van high enough to get the engine out. onto axle stands.
Jack back under engine and drag about on that
That's a 3 ton jack - they're bigger with a large pad so it's easier, but the engine's light so you could tip it off the jack onto some hardboard and drag it out and around on that. Also if you can't get the van high enough, tilt the engine back and drag it out the side.
No need to support the gearbox on a late bay.

  4. Normal lift trolley jack and a piece of ply under the engine to drop the engine down

Then lift the bus to give enough clearance to pull the engine out

  5. The man in the pub said its only4 bolts...

If you have an prototype bay, 4 bolts will indeed remove the engine complete with gearbox. ;)

  7. Dont be scared of doing it i did mine on my own with one broken hand whilst zed contemplated the meaning of life

Ok to be fair to steve he did help me lift it onto a mechanics creeper and push it into the corner of the car port lol

  10. I want to take mine out over the winter.
Are there any extra considerations I need to make with mine being a 2l fuel injected?
Sorry for the slight thread jack.
