Removing the Moonraker Double top in lockdown

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by bagpus, Dec 20, 2020.

1. I need to remove the hinged, full length roof but due to lockdown there is a lack of available people to help ( we are in level 2, most of my mates are in level 3) ........so has anyone managed to do this single handed?

The hope was to get working on the roof and gutters in the holiday.

Build a frame over the bus, get pulleys, ropes, and some yachty cleats on the uprights to hold the ends of the ropes when you have to work on other ropes..

Think Kruger rigged something up in his garage once to do it single handed?

1. Put length of wood across garage door at mid height of pop top.
2. Drive towards garage door at speed.
3. Pick up pop top from garage floor.

Simples!

5. I have a Leisurdrive top which is similar to a Westy and having struggled just to lift the back end and renew the hinges my tuppence-worth would be to not even attempt total removal without at least 3 helpers or a block and tackle . Preferably both ... :)

6. Thanks for all the suggestions and advice. If anyone has a strong Health and Safety background they should stop reading now!
I built two frames out of fence posts and screwed them roughly together, tied in to the joists of the garage and with blocks normally used for dinghy control lines at each corner, then gradually lifted the roof until it cleared the van and slowly drove the van out from underneath, which left the roof suspended.

and then gradually lowered to the ground

Didn't seem half as heavy at this level!

7. Managed our roof with two people. Don’t think it’s as heavy as a moonraker though.

8. @Gooders still looks pretty heavy! Like what you are doing to recover the roof, what material are you using?

9. Its car roof lining material perforated with foam backing. Available off the roll
I used self adhesive insulation then glued the lining to it. Make sure you use good quality trim adhesive though as the cheaper stuff melts when it gets hot. I got some from a vehicle trimmer. Still holding well 3 years on.

10. Serious weight in a moonraker roof, it is more than capable of damaging itself or people if things go wrong.

I took one off myself but had pulleys in a high roof farm shed, not a job I would want to tackle without the pulleys or at least 6 strong individuals.

Slow and steady with a plan of action and somewhere to set the roof if using people to lift it off, wooden beams across the roof underside will help get more peoples hands on the lift when moving.
