I have a 1600 with running problem. It wasn't firing on cranking, I changed plugs, leads, coil. It has electronic ignition. Spark is good. I then removed (bocar) carb jet and cleaned, replacing the choke coil as I thought it was faulty and wasn't working. Shut off solenoid clicks when switching ignition in and connecting wire. It now seems to fire better on cranking, but won't rev above 1000rpm, foot to floor and doesn't rev up. What's people's thoughts / ideas to look at next ? it was running brilliantly until recently, just all of a sudden doesn't want to run. Thanks.
Does it idle OK or need throttle? Junk electronic module or magnet ring fried during summer sun this summer, now it sulks and acts as a rev limiter or causes starting issues. Basically you spend all that money and it fails the same as points and a condenser.. Plug wires fallen off... two missing will do it..it will rev a bit , but will do 5mph on the flat. Rocker arm assembly unbolted one side in rocker cover, similar to two missing plugs. Jammed advance in distributor. Throttle cable breaking and stretched, idles OK wont accelerate but will rev up at the engine end if you move the throttle on the carburettor. Too much air - hose fallen off.. Too much fuel - could be ultra rich - it will stink, jammed float valve in carburettor. Nightmare - Semi seized bearing.. fuel in oil from jammed float valve eg above..
Won't idle without throttle all way to floor. As soon as I take a bit off it stalls, it will only rev to 1500rpm and doesn't sound right (like misfire or being starved of fuel perhaps) I will check the throttle respond at carb side to check cable, take rocker covers offf and check bolts + arms ,check fuel pump output then if OK swap out the dizzy electronic module and pick up, hopefully will find out its something simple. Thanks
Unfortunately don't have the original, bus came with electronic module instead. Will try and lay my hands on one locally and try it. Always worth having as a back up in any case.
The fact it doesnt idle but needs wide open throttle to run at all means its probably not the throttle cable. If this was a hot USA state they would be also suggesting stale fuel. If you left the fuel tank mostly empty, its possible the fuel in the tank has lost its volatile components that help starting and running; especially if the tank breather system has become more open to the air than originally built (split breather hoses in the engine bay) .. Give it 5 litres of fresh fuel if the tank is really low.
Hi all. Been a while, thought I would follow up to close the loop on this starting/running issue. In the end it was an air leak from gasket between carb and manifold. New gasket and nuts and away she goes. Did also replace the rubber hose connectors between Inlet manifold pieces as a precaution. Seems to start and run well. Looking forwards to weather improving to get her out, thanks
