Seat cover making advice please

  1. Hi all,

This is a question for all the seamstressessesses out there. (wasn't sure of the spelling of that)

Anyway, I have some original bay seats which are knackered so I want to pop some new foam in them and sew up some new vinyl covers using the old set of covers as patterns. I think I can do all that...

However, I want to make the seat and seat back fluted. So I was going to use scrim foam as this seams to be the right way to do it after much you tube searching :) I was going to buy all the bits from Woolies but the question i have is

'What size scrim foam is best for the flutes?'

They do three sizes and I'm not sure which one is best. I didn't know if anyone on here has any experience and could let me know what thickness I should be using. They do 3mm, 6mm and 13mm thicknesses.

    Thanks in advance dudes

  2. erm no idea sorry you've confused me with all the measurements. I just look, tilt my head to one side and cut.

  3. I've got 6mm, gives a good flute effect, 3mm will be pointless and 12mm would probably struggle to stitch through unless you've got an industrial machine.

The 6mm scrim is available on ebay, like this.

Just make sure any you buy is backed otherwise the stitch will just go straight through the foam.

  4. Cool thanks,

Was thinking that might be the case.

    I'll post up my efforts......

  5. Oi, don't forget- When using the original upholstery as your pattern, it has stretched a bit over the years. Cut the new fabric the same size, but take the seams in about half an inch.
Nothing says crappy upholstery like sags and ripples.
Think Meg Ryan and stitch everything up as tight as possible. Ha!
