Sliding door - Broken key ?!****!

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by hibiscrub, Jan 1, 2012.

  1. My key has broken off in my sliding door.
Didn't notice at the time and only realised when I had 1/2 a key.
Any idea how to get it out please????
(Havn't taken lock to bits as yet - any instructions would also be appreciated)

If no-one has any clever ideas any idea as to where I can get a single chrome barrel.
I realise I may need to get the new barrel and re-key.
    (I have seen this thread ...Re-keying a lock - Tutorial http://thelatebay.com/index.php?topic=478.0 )
    Thanks in advance.

Assuming you can't get it with needle nose pliers then I would deconstruct the barrel as per the rekeying, remove the broken part and put back together.

  3. Many thanks
    I'll have a go tomorrow

Ps Is it easy to take the lock apart/barrel out

  4. if you have the barrel out try tapping the barrell on a hard surface to see if keys wiglles out a bit..

If you get the barrel out, pretty sure you'll be able to push out the broken bit from the back. The number for a new key is stamped on the barrel.

  6. whs^^^ the barrel is held in with one screw once its out tap it face down on a piece of wood to make the key slide out. ps be careful that the stamped number on the barrel is the key number as it could have been retumbled at some time (dont ask how i know its a costly story :( )

  7. Could'n't get the key out but got the door apart and cylinder/barrel out. It's one of these ..
    http://www.justkampers.com/shop/cylinder-lock-for-sliding-door-j16964.html
but couldn't get the barrel itself apart - for fear of braking it*, but....
My broken '1/2' key now appears to work so put back together again.
The guide http://thelatebay.com/index.php?topic=478.0 appears to be for the driver/cab doors
    unless i'm mistaken.

Therefore... anyone know how to get the sliding door lock apart &/or cheapest place for a replacement (RHD Van)

would ideally like to have one key opens all.

    Many Thanks
    Hib

    * the front end is crimped on and the back end held on with a toothed lock washer like this

  9. Tried WD 40 and my slider lock is indeed different to my cab locks.

Back of lock has no hole and my worry is that I'll damage the toothed locking washer and/or front of barrell housing.
Did you manage to break yours apart OK?
I seem to be very good at having a go at fixing something, making it worse and then having to buy a new one.

I asked about RHD as the cheapest i could see stated LHD
    http://www.germancampercompany.com/lock-cylinder-for-t2-sliding-door-74-79-lhd-german-quality-p-405.html

I think I may be best to leave as is till I see a cheap replacement (maybe ebay) and then have a play.

    Many thanks for all advice.

With a bit of jiggery pokery you might be able to get the remains of the key out and a new one cut from the 2 bits.

  11. Searched on line no jiggery pokery
I did try Halfords last week... they did have some jiggery but no jiggery pokery.
At £39.99 I thought I would wait till I could get some of the proper stuff.

Birdy... where did you get yours?

PPS I do have a spare key which wont insert... the broken one does work however

  13. there are key removal tools on the market
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BROKEN-KEY-REMOVAL-EXTRACTOR-TOOLS-MECHANIC-LOCKSMITH-10-PIECE-/120830126082?pt=UK_Hand_Tools_Equipment&hash=item1c22096802#ht_1596wt_1056
i have used them in the past and they are quite effective although you need to hold the flap back out of the way as you tug them out.
when the key is out Take it to Timpson and they should be able to cut the Key from its two parts.
i do it all the time in my Shop in Guildford. .
in fact yesterday i had a guy with an old mitsubishi who was stuck in the car park with a broken key managed to put the bits together and get an accurarate copy got hin out of trouble

  14. Many thanks
    Really helpful.
Anyone know if the star washer/toothed locking washer is easy to get hold of if breaks?

  15. local bolt and fastner place should have them or try a local iron mongers if you have any near you

  16. you could turn the van on its side and shake it if your feeling strong !......did you get it out for the lads?

  17. Update

Purchased a second hand sliding lock barrel
Fitted lovely and as a bonus my key fits new lock & my ignition/front door key without adjustment!!!!…Job done!

Thought I’d take my old lock apart (just for fun!!) to remove the broken bit of key and have as a spare.

    So...

    Uncrimp front housing – OK
Clip off star washer – OK
    Slide barrel out – OK
No hole at back of lock so couldn’t push broken key bit out.
Had to prise front of lock off with sprung flappy thing where key goes in – bit of a bugger to get off as crimped AND very hard to crimp securely back on again.
End result – managed to damage lock slightly and rather loose… ie fairly ruined

In summary... if your key breaks off in the sliding door lock buy a new barrel.
If you just want to rekey – http://thelatebay.com/index.php?topic=478.0 ..maybe give it a go but is harder to do than on the front door barrels

    Good luck

  18. the easiest way to get a broken key out of a lock is to use some loctite glue, you need the good strong stuff. Put it on the end of the broken bit you have in your hand - push it into the lock and wait a few minutes for it to go off, then pull the key straight out.
    :)
