Smelly double cab

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by bluething, Sep 8, 2012.

  1. Hello, I have managed to pick up a quite nice 76 double cab. The body is okay but has had a bit of a tart up respray which will be going back to its original colour when I can afford.. The problem I have is a strong smell of petrol. Do they all smell?? It's a 2ltr engine. Any advice would be greatly received. :)
    Cheers

  2. Check all of your fuel pipe for cracking and leaks also the filler neck and the tank .if you can smell fuel there's a reason .don't drive it if its leaking fuel

  3. Search on here about fuel pipes, tank vents and filler neck.
    There is plenty of info

  4. have a look behind the panels in you locker, the t piece on the breather has probably perished...

    welcome.. 8)

  5. had a look at all of the pipes and tubes. no leaks found and nothing's wet. what i did find was that half of the pipes for the heating system were missing. I'm going to take a few picks and post here so that i can learn what the various bits were supposed to do. i'm thinking that the fumes from the engine bay are getting into the heating system and working their way to the cab. ???

cheers for all the replies :)

  6. so this afternoon i was looking at all the vorious pipes that seem top be missing and found a few bits that needed sorting. The air filter assembly that sits on top of the engine has a part to the right that sits down into a round hole that's supposed to be sealed by a rubber collar. these were miles out and I could get my finger in the gap between the rubber bit and the air filter housing. then while i was there I noticed that all of the top of the engine had a sticky gummed up feeling. I traced this back to the crank case breather. the pipe that's supposed to vent into the air intake was nowhere to be seen. I ran the engine and although it's not a load of preassure the vent does blow petrol smelliung fumes into the engine bay. off to get tome hose and connect it all back up again. :)
