Spluttering engine and Coil Mount Broken

  1. Hello again,

On the way back from Elemental the van had a big splutter, not a mis fire with a loud bang more of a sudden loss of power for a split second and then jolt. We had been travelling for about 60 miles not tanking it max 60 on the down hill stretches. After the splutter it seemed alright then when we turned off the dual carriage way going through the gears it spluttered all the way till we were in 4th then stopped at about 55 (can never be exact as the speedo is a rough estimation)

When we got home i left the van to idle a while and it sounded alright, to a have ago limited knowledge driver. Then i noticed the top part of the coil mount (standard coil mount) of snapped away from the main tin ware.

Could this have caused the spluttering as it would have been giving a bad earth connection or could it be something else.

It is a standard 1600 TP, Single 34 carb

    Thanks again in advance

  2. I could be wrong but I don't believe the coil earths from its casing, the earth comes from one of the spade connectors.

  3. The coil doesn't need an earth, so unlikely to be the cause of your probs.

I'd check that the contact breakers haven't closed up.

  4. The reason why i thought the coil and the earth may be the problem is that in KYBA 5 it mentions

"the coil is earthed through its body, normally to the fan shroud. If the bolts are loose or missing it will not earth".

In a previous experience may condensor had come away from its bracket and was just vibrating, it kept loosing power because of no or bad earth and jolting around (a lot worse than today though). when that was connected again all was alright. After that incident we changed to electronic ignition.

Obviously i am now going to have to fix the coil mount. i have been through an old cool air catalogue and have seen the billet coil mount and it says it can be used to repair and remount coil on broken fan shrouds, has any one used one of these coil mounts to fix a broken bolt on the fan shroud and if so were they any good, as i cannot afford a new fan shroud to fix this problem. I don't want a small problem like this ruining the summer for us.
