Springs and cup fasteners

Hi all,

My brake shoes don't have the springs, cup fasteners as circled in pic.

The backing plate doesn't have holes for the pin so perhaps it doesn't have them.

Is that right?

They were not fitted to later vans

 

^this. My ‘78 backplates had no holes. VW seemed to think you could live without them.

 

Yet they decided to put them back on Brazilian busses
I’d love to know vws thinking behind getting rid and then what caused them to put them back

I put them on mine as the new back plates had holes for them and the pins,springs and cups came in the rebuild kit.
