Starting problem

  1. well ive tried to start her up today, no joy..

Tracked it down to not having any spark from the coil. Problem is I dont know why. I have 12v across the brand new petronix 1 with the ignition on. This goes down to 9v when cranking over. I have tried a single lead straight from coil to a new plug touching metal, but still no spark.

Im going to give the battery a god charge overnight to see if that helps, but if anyone else can offer advice please as i'm doing the vw head scratch at mo :banghead:

  2. Pertronix have built in low voltage protection, which means it won't spark if the voltage is low. Have you had the pertronix working at all? A single incident of getting the wiring mixed up or shorting it will fry it and render it u/s
    :)

  3. Not had it working at all yet Joker.

Had an old Bosch coil and points before, but they didn't work, so have changed the lot.

Connections are switch live and red from petronix to term 15 on coil

Black from petronix and ground cable to fan housing to terminal 1 on coil

Think they are right so I'm hoping the low voltage thingy might be the prob.
It does say somewhere that the voltage will drop to 9v when cranking over??

  4. did it work before you made the change to EI and are you sure you got your connections right first time around?

You have removed and disconnected the condensor, have the pertronix module located properly in the base of the dizzy, and have the magnetic ring pushed home as far as it will go?
    :)

  5. Just an aside - I had pertronix 2 and it worked fine and then stopped for no apparent reason, and they don't 'develop' faults. They work or they don't, works or knackered.

I ended up with accuspark off ebay - cheaper and better and hasn't failed yet. Half the price of pertronix so I bought a spare - just in case
    :)

  6. Yeah got em that way the first time.
But I think the low volt might be the key at the coil.

Goin to connect it direct to Battery tomoz to see if I can get a spark then. Fingers crossed.

Cheers Joker, wished u lived near to Swadlincote though!! It would ov been worth a few jars for some advice!! ;)

  7. get some jumpers on it - if you've been out of action for a while you're battery could be too low. Check your chassis and battery earths too

When i'm better i'm more than happy to pop over to Swadlincote for a beer. Now, I'm trying to remember - I know someone in or around Swadlincote VW related
    :)

  9. 9V on the coil when cranking over suggests poor state of battery to me...

  10.
  11. Ooops!!

Will try it out tomoz. Hope I've not fried it:-((

    Thanks for helping. ;-)

  12. 9v should start it easily

  13.
  14. I have had to change the bus from an fuel injection to a twin carb set up. C
I thought I spotted an found cable from the meh side of the coil on the wiring diagram.

Hopefully like u say it ain't knackd the stuff up.

  15. Yeeeeeessssss

    She started!!!! Cheers chaps.

She did sound like a bag of spammers though. Timing all out I think. So goin to learn how to do that now, but at least she fires up!

  16. Cheers Joker. I've done all the valves it is just the dizzy.

After about 20 secs there was an increasing amount of white smoke coming off exhaust and so I switched it off. Presuming its a bit of oil and paint burning off, but didn't want to chance it.
