wanted to remove my steering wheel to carry out some repair work on it , have removed horn cap and nut but the wheel won t budge, am i missing something here
Nope, you just need to use brute force. Put the nuts back on a couple to turns so when it does release it doesn't fly off. One hand at 9 o'clock, one hand at 3 o'clock and pull directly up and give it a wiggle.
Probably best for a shorter person to do it so they don't have to bend so much. It it really wont budge you could try the boiling water trick:- Boil the kettle and poor over the centre and pull again. You will probably want to remove the column switches or cover them with towels.
you need a 3 leg (small) hub puller for this, the hot water trick also works but tends to leak water everywhere on removal!
If you've got an earlier wheel on a taper, you will unfortunately need a puller of some kind (used to be able to hire steering wheel pullers). Late, late bays have straight splines, so the wheel normally pulls straight off.
Saw a mate fight with the wheel of his MGB for 3 or 4 hours, eventually it gave and I took him to A+E for 5 stiches in his eyebrow...one of the funniest things I've seen we were all in fits...
If you havnt got a puller try piece of 2 by 1 n arf across u/s wheel, stick 10mm hole thru middle then put large washer with 10mm nut on us and wind a 6" bolt thru onto top of shaft that should lift it off 8)
