started the engine today for the first time in about 4 months as been doing various work on van. it didnt want to start so upped the pressure regulator and started with first turn with no hesitation. but last time i ran it im sure this knocking sound wasnt there. is it because its not been run for a while and just needs to warm up? (didnt run it too long just incase it is a problem) or is it something more serious i wonder? or am i just worrying about nothing? it sounds like it comeing from around the number 1 spark plug area. any ideas? its a cu engine and auto if that makes any difference cheers
For future reference, high pitched sound = rockers/tappets what ever you choose to call them. Dull thumping/thuddy sound = bottom end, rod knock etc. From your video that is the higher pitched sound of the rockers. I'm guessing that its got hydraulic lifters, so you need to warm the engine up and give it a good run. You don't warm these up by letting it sit and tick over - wack it up to 2500 - 3000rpm for 20 minutes and upset the neighbours. Anything less and all you're going to do is shorten the life of your engine. Don't rev it, just get it up to the 2500/3000 rpm and hold it there. If you don't have hydraulic lifters check your valve clearances
ok good its put my mind at ease. i only had it going once or twice before and it had a different exhaust on (home made by previous owner)which was very loud so maybe i didnt notice the tapping noise so much.
they all make that noise, some louder than others. I've heard some whisper quiet type 4's that sound as smooth as silk. Mine is really very noisy (not just exhaust) listen to the difference on these 2. Vid one stock exhaust with single carb, vid 2 with noisy exhaust, dells and K+N filters, which makes it all very throaty, but when it ticks over you can hear the engine tapping behind the exhaust. Its fine though. P1080484 Volkswagen Bus Type 4 engine, loud exhaust
Just watched the first vid, sounds great but you need to get a fan basket on it. Stops the crap getting sucked into the cooling system !!
i had exactly the same convo at techenders, mine is the same engine and an auto and it knocks like the first video, but it never used to (i don't think) but everyone said it was ok so i just keep the radio on.
