  3. Did you tell the dood on the phone that even though the engine bay is a small volume it is effectively a wind tunnel? All your fire quenching gas will be gone in a matter of seconds.

But it has two chimneys which either act as chimneys or air feeds if there is a breeze ...
and a constant feed of fuel from the split hose or melted filter... So it will need a lot more gas than you think to put out the fire and hopefully it triggers before a pool of burning petrol can leave the engine bay.

  6. I've got an extinguisher. Have you? Many haven't. I do intent not to set it on fire. Regular pipe checks etc. it's a precaution and a catastrophe will out run any extinguisher. A false activation of a powder on top of carbs will require a rebuild almost every time as the pumice like qualities of the powder will kill a motor if ingested.
It's another line of defence not a failsafe

True, and an automatic extinguisher that triggers when things are a bit too hot rather than when the view in the mirrors is a cloud of smoke and flame is more likely to put out the fire you before you need a big extinguisher .

And you will probably not suffer what happened when I bought an auto CFC extinguisher for my boat when they were still legal. I decided to go and hand it in as an evil menace, only to find it had rusted through under the valve at the top and there wasnt any gas in it any more.

From the evidence when I tried a 1kg powder extinguisher on a burning T shirt rag .. angle grinder error. .. you would need a 5kg powder extinguisher to put out a proper fire.
I ended up picking up the rags, carrying them outside and jumping on them. It worked better.

Why is it every time I try to take my brake drums off to check the pads and drums, one of the 7mm bolts has siezed up so solid I have to drill it out ? And when I look at it afterwards the bolt head is nice and clean and not rusty.

Anyway I checked and adjusted the rear brakes because pulling hard enough on the handbrake on a 1 in 6 hill to hold it would knock it out of first gear.

Spent part of Thursday squirting copious quantities of windscreen sealant into the windscreen seal in an effort to stop the damn thing leaking.
This morning I turned the garden hose on it.

...honestly I'm scared to look.....

  15. Very productive Sunday.

Redid the value clearances after following the non hydraulic instructions. Runs and ticks over lovely now.

Reattached the thermostat cable. but think I may have an issue with the cooling flaps as it seemed to do nothing once the thermostat contracted down.

Sprayed the cargo floor, just need to finish tidying up now. Also sprayed the captains seat base.

Took steering wheel bracket off my old dashboard and welded it to the new Brazilian dashboard. fits and looks great.

Remaining jobs are to reconnect the dash up, put the seats back in and then I am ready to drive it up to Camper Shak for the new interior. :chewie:

  17. I spent most of Sunday reassembling one of my carbs and re-setting the fuel pressure regulator, which I think was too low.
Then the neighbours lit a barbeque the other side of the wall where the van is parked, and I didn't fancy playing with fuel lines any longer. Will try to fit the rebuilt carbs this evening, if it's dry.

I did have an extended break to watch a Spitfire doing an air display over the Medway for the Chatham Historic Dockyard "Salute to the 40's" event, which we attended on Sat. :)

Spent a few hours over at the workshop this afternoon as I managed to leave work early. Now have the mounts for the rollover jig attached to the chassis, gave up trying to get the brake callipers off. Hoping overnight soaked in plus gas may help.
