    Interesting read.

It’s also reassuring to read that the old tennis ball trick does actually work! I used to have to do that with my old 1500 single port in the beetle with the unvented engine lid.

So drive with a tennis ball in your hatch, then?

  5. What's the trick to getting the bellows out of the frame, please, Barry.

Obviously, the nut on the end needs to come undone, but it doesn't want to budge, is there a trick I am missing?

I applied some torque to the nut and the bellows started to twist and deform in the frame, I don't want to damage the bellows, so I thought I'd better seek advice from the panel.

    Thanks. PXL_20221003_174958342.jpg

Barry Haynes I dance in leopard skin mankini’s

It should just unscrew, don’t apply heat whatever you do

  7. Ok, thanks, I'll get the plus gas out and try again tomorrow.

Does the nut screw into a brass thread? Dissimilar metal corrosion at work, perhaps?

Just screws in, the thermostat shouldn’t be able to twist as it’s held in place in the bracket by a groove

  9. Hooray for Plus Gas, it's free from the cradle, thanks for pointer, Barry. I would have been tempted to use a bit of heat, it's pretty obvious once everything is cleaned up a bit on why that would have been inadvisable

My thermostat problems are now in front of me :(

  10. @Barry Haynes, which end did you remove, please? The cable end or the nut end? Thanks.

My cable seems integrated into the thermostat.

Edit, it's the cable end that leaked:(

Unscrew the brass bit on the cable end... but... that's not the original bit which would have looked like this one.
What temp is stamped on the end?

  12. It's stamped 65 to 70 deg. Is it for a Type 1?

I don't know, I was stalling before suggesting that. Think my type-4 2L one is 85-90, but 1700's were cooler and type-1 cooler still. You could google for the info or you'd be able to tell if you could unscrew the cable holder but maybe you don't want to risk it? I know it's a thing to convert type-1 thermostats, the thinking being something is better than nothing. I bought mine from Awesome Powdercoat (?), It cost an arm and a leg with post and import taxes.

  14. Ratwell seems to think 65-70 degrees is for a Type 1, but...this is a 1700 type 4 block

It's bust, so I don't have anything to loose removing the cable.

A Type 4 one would obviously be ideal, I think.

How does the type 4 cable attach? Thanks.

Edit: interestingly it has 10 vanes...

    The car one's were different.

I don't think Awsome Powdercoat supply them but I've seen plenty Type-4 ones with a lower opening temp 65-70???
Type 4 unscrew the hex bit, thread cable, screw it back on.

  16. Probably a type 1 stat that has been converted to work on a type 4. Type 4’s were 85-90 degrees but as said needs must and a 65-70 degree one is better than non at all.

  17. The cable brass bit should still unscrew in the same way the hex bit would. You will need a pair of pliers to grip it.

  18. I think the number of vanes depends on the supplier. I’ve seen stats with the same temperature range some had 10 vanes where others had more.

  19. Ok, so I will try and a) remove cable and b) fill with isopropyl, if Ratwell is correct then it's the liquid that sets the range, they are similar is most other respects, right?

If you look on page 2 bazza posted some info confirming some lower temp type-4 thermostats for CB engines so they are about.
