type one thermostat

  1. My bus did not come with one. From what I can tell I need the mounting bracket - someone on the samba is selling one, I've emailed him. I also need a thermostat and the rod that goes through the cylinders. vw heritage has these parts
From what I can tell with a mirror and a torch the flaps and spring are still in the fan shroud.

It looks like the rod is threaded and screws into the thermostat, is this how you are supposed to adjust it, if so how is this done? or do you screw it all the way in?
How does it attach at the flaps end? I can see the rod has a bend in it, what does that go through or attach to?
I know this is going to be fiddly to do with the engine in, any tips?
I'll be buying one of the old style thermostats, I have no temp guage and I know the new mexican ones do not fail safe like the old ones do.

  2. The rod hooks in to a couple of holes in the flap mechanism as I recall, with a little clip on the end.

To adjust the thermos stat, loosen the bracket mounting bolt, screw the thermostat on to the end of the rod and push it fully upwards so the flaps are in the fully open position. Move the bracket down so the top face is touching the top of the thermostat and tighten the mounting bolt. This'll be the position when the thermo's fully expanded: the bracket stops it expanding endlessly.

Now pull the thermostat body down (the flaps will close) and bolt it to the bottom face of the frame. Done!

When the thermo heats up, it'll expand until it hits the top of the frame, opening the flaps.

  3. The rod fits into the spring clip on the bottom of the flaps as below:

Really need to drop the engine and take off the fan housing to get at it all.

  4. Indeed, it is a springy thing, not holes.

  5. Great, just need to get the bits now, reckon it's worth doing
