Using an earlex spray station

  1. Has anyone used one of the Earlex spray stations to paint their bus?
    One of these things:

Hopefully i'll be finishing my bugs welding soon and will want to get some paint onto it before the summer (of sorts) ends.
I've not got space to store a big compressor (or the cash to buy one) and the Earlex sprayers come up on ebay for a fairly reasonable price.

I'll be using celly and will be painting outside (no garage). :(
I'm not after a show quality job, just something tidy and useable.

  2. Hi Zebedee ! i used the hv 3500 from earlex to spray my van in Rustoleum and i have to say i was very mpressed with the results and i had never sprayed anything before . I needed to get the body coated asap to protect over the last two winters so painted it once with about 5 coats then following summer igave it another 5 coats . Last week i sanded it back and polished it up and it gleams . I am well pleased and in fact very surprised at the results mate . Go for it i'd say all day long ! 8)

  3. Seems to be the cheaper alternative to buying a compressor and all the kit.
Thinking of buying a cheap 3m x 6m party gazebo to paint it in. ;)

  4. A mate of mine sprayed a mini with the older version with tractor enamel and then spent a weekend with the polishing mop on it

It had a shine like ive never seen from a pro paint job and water beaded of it amazingly

Dude buy one and some rustoleum and the purchase cost will be feck all compared to the value it will add to your bus

  5. then sell it on to me and ill sell it on to another late bayer....etc etc ....was thinking the same idea bruv....ill have to wait til aug tho ....great idea !

  6. Need to get my bug welded up first, then painted before i can even think about painting my bus.
Celly paint isn't too expensive but that rustoleum is great value and polishes up great.

I could borrow a huge compressor off a mate but its so big i couldn't store it anywhere. The earlex looks much simpler (and quieter) to use than a hoofin' great compressor too. :)

  7. ive got one of these, i spray everything with it. The key to any spraying is the atttention to preparation of the surface and the pain you mix. I think you could do it and then like said, get the mop out.

  8. Any idea which needle and fluid tip i'd need? They come with a 2mm one but theres a 1.0mm and a 1.5mm one available as spare parts.
Instructions online say 1.0 or 1.5 is suitable for cellulose but will say the 1.5mm one do for both primer and topcoat?

  9. How much is one of these then?

  10. Earlex sell them from under £100 for a cheap one, to £180ish for a decent one all the way upto £400+.
Apollo sell them aswell for £100 to over £300.

I've been offered the use of one of the apollo ones by a mate in our local VW club so will see how it goes. :)

  11. Be interested to know if it is idiot proof as I want to spray my engine bay at sometime.

  12. Aparently on the one i'm borrowing theres a single adjuster on the back that controls the amount of paint it sprays.
You thin the paint, try it on an old panel and if its not spraying enough you turn the adjuster a little and try again until its correct.
    Simples. ;D

    Nice video here:

Only thing i can see thats a problem is the gun is constantly blowing air from the minute you switch the turbine on (the trigger just shuts off the paint) so when you stop painting you have to make sure you don't point the gun at the floor as it could blow dust up.

I'm planning on spraying the interior, exterior, engine bay and under the bonnet of my bug with it.
Gonna probably do the engine bay and under bonnet area, then the interior before masking them off and doing the outside.

  13. Wet the floor down before you start painting it will stop the dust kicking up

  14. Planning on doing that. Gonna buy some of the huge 4x5m plastic dust sheets from B&Q to cover stuff i don't want painting green. ;)

  15. Zebs keep us updated and put some pics up when you do it ;)

  16. Will do.
I've been trying to work out why its much cheaper to buy paint in a Ral or BS shade than matched to a VW code. Some of the plaint places i've asked said they couldn't find a mixing potion (or whatever) for L60D Elm green. :(

I'd really like to keep the original VW colour but if i save myself £50 pr £60 from buying something thats nearly the same colour i'll have to do that instead.
