Good evening. Can’t get the van to start now. 1600, rebuilt, 400 miles on it.
Went like a dream, turns over nice, starts then off I went. Left it for a bit, wouldn’t start, seemed like the timings out, reset everything got it to start after spraying a load of east start in the air filter. Ran like carp , couldn’t keep it going, finally got round to changing the fuel filter today.
Turns over, still won’t start, but fuels getting into the pots and igniting, coughing, but not starting. Any ideas anyone?
Thinking carb blocked, but blew it through, in situ. Maybe electrical? Really don’t know.

Start at the beginning with easy stuff I would check

    Fuel to the carb
    Spark
    Fuel to the plugs
    Valve gaps
    Timing
    Compression test

Agree with Matty, start with easy to check / confirm stuff.

Is the cut off solonoid in the carb OK?

If it was running well before - it can’t be anything huge.

Get a fuel cap full of fuel and chuck half down each carb. If it runs proper for a few seconds , then you’re pretty sure it’s a fuel supply issue. It could be crap settling around your fuel outlet or in the carb or anywhere. Take the fuel pipe off the carb and lay it in the neck of a one or two litre empty water bottle, have an assistant glamorous or otherwise turn the motor over while you hold it in the noisey cupboard and check your fuel supply, if it’s bouncing off the bottom of the bottle like a fourteen year old excited young fella then the fuel issue is after this point, if it is dribbling like a whatever then it is pre this point.

Ozziedog ,,,,,,,, then we are looking in the right places :)

Using easy start to make sure you wash oil off piston rings ?

After leaving the bus for a few weeks not running it, I have gone from no fuel because fuel pump had not filled carb yet through to flooding it without noticing.
I just have to crank for 20-30 seconds without the constant stamping I am so tempted to do..

Been there done it not having the patience to just crank and leave the throttle pedal alone, or hold it wide open..

    One pump starts it.
    Four pumps floods it.

Once it starts it then runs badly for a while as the excess clears out.. wont idle but will drive badly at first but pick up after a few hundred metres if you give it lots of throttle.
Then runs and starts perfectly again..

No. It was running great, so not block related. I have been through everything, but I will do again. Bloody thing.
    Still.
    It ain’t eating any grass….

Yes. Didn’t use much easy start,as I know it acts as a ‘good’ degreaser, Mike. I know what you mean. It’s just frustrating when I’ve spent so much time on the engine this year, and I have been out in it and it’s ran so great.
    Just p**** me off.
I fancied doing a camp,up on the Mendips in it, as I have been given permission to park up there now, on a bit of land out of the way.
Be nice to get the bloody thing running.

    I’ll look next month…

Yes and yes. It like it try’s to start, but not firing on all cylinders. I simply havnt had the inclination to have a go at it again yet.Wouldn’t go as far as saying I have lost interest in it, as I plan to do a load more stuff on it, but not yet, as I have to turn my attention to other things. But it is a pita.

All of the above. Plus the missing apostrophe!

The missing apostrophe could have fallen through the carb? Happened to mine and engine came to a full stop

  15. Weren't you having issues with lots of crud in your fuel filter? Unless I'm imagining it, you were suspecting a fuel tank corrosion issue and were buying a job lot of filters?

As per purple above, what was the fuel filter like when you took it off , clear or full of crud , if full what as it . My mate had similar issues as you describe and he had what looked like copper filings in the filter , it was the inside of the fuel line that was disintegrating though they looked brand new on the outside (he had the orange pipe like gas pipe ). Change of pipe and filter and back to normal

The filter had some thing in. I changed the fuel to some new stuff and put a brand new filter on.
Blew the carb out and it was still not having any of it, then Christmas happened and I havnt returned to it. I will do, though. I just need a motivation kick up the arse as I have lots of other things happening here, too. If you see what I mean.
