I thought that might impact your journey

I live close to the diversionary routes...I'm hunkering down and staying indoors for 3 days....:D

Well, just back from the show. We approached from the south on the A3 and the traffic was fine - we kept an eye on traffic on Saturday and there wasn’t a problem, so we thought we’d chance it on Sunday.

Show was ok, but I’m quite worried it’s on the decline. The hall was full of nice cars and the quality of the show cars was exceptional.

The space in front to of the grandstand was all classic golf’s, the parade area was only half full and the bit where they had the modern transporters last at the top was empty. Maybe a dozen campers and no parking on the grass… all very quiet!

Now I hope it’s only the circumstances of very wet weather preceding the event limiting the use of the grass, the potential chaos of the M25 closure and perhaps the old cost of living crisis, but it really does seem like this show has got quieter over the years. £32 for an adult did seem a bit much

I was thinking something similar after VW Action last year… quiet, less show cars, more tat stalls, expensive to get in.

Maybe the shows need a refresh… Beach Dubbin in Portsmouth is absolutely rammed in the summer. £10 entry, one day show, a bit of entertainment and lots of cars.

    I don’t know, hopefully these things aren’t decline :(

  6. Cost of living ??
    Traffic chaos ??
    Expensive weekend away ??

Probably all the above but Volksworld have been milking it over the last 20 years and being the first show of the year it`s usually a good indication of things to come . I spoke to a couple of the regular stall holders last year who were adamant that 2023 was going to be their last one due to declining punter numbers - just the cost involved with getting there and paying for the expensive stall simply wasn`t paying their bills . Pre-pandemic a dozen or so of us on Late Bay would show up and have a decent display and camping weekend organised by Simon Daisy which was a hoot although having to get into position from the campsite for 9am AND staying in the display all day clearly wasn`t appreciated by the organisers and the free tickets suddenly stopped . A couple of years ago the Splitty club decided not to support the show and their spectacular 80 or so vans with prime spot in the show ring left a massive gap in proceedings .
Can`t see it surviving to be honest and its been on the decline because yes , it`s good to get together with friends but when you`re paying silly money for being part of their `success` with no appreciation from the organisers it starts wearing a bit thin ....

Just my tuppence worth and i`m often wrong

  7. I went and thought show was ok . There were a good couple dozen early and splits outside in the display area , a few lates and a T5 display . Difficult to cater for all tastes but I understand they don’t want a group of random campers with random people just drinking . The vehicles have to be of interest or decent standard / unusual not just mates

I think it’s been on the wane since Volksworld magazine changed hands.

The old crew were real enthusiasts.

The new lot are just cashing in.

    Just my opinion.

I've been going for years. mainly coz it's tradition. And me and a neighbour are just dying to get the vans out and go camping in march. It's only down the road too. But I'm thinking why don't we do something else at this time of year instead. I'm thinking local camping trip. My mate didn't even go up to the show this year. Just stayed in the field! To be honest he didn't miss much. Same old same old.

  10. I think you're missing the point or maybe I wasn't clear . We were giving up a whole weekend to help make their show a success . The Late Bay weren't a group of 'mates with campers' drinking the day away , 3 or 4 of us had met previously at Techenders / Keiths field and others from the forum travelled from far and wide - even forrin parts to put on a line up and support the show . Not only most variants of camper either , panel vans , dokas , commercials all made an appearance over the years and as we all know every owner has a tale to tell and there was always someone asking questions as opposed to the 'send it away to the restorer' brigade .
One of our lot even won best in show one year , driven there and parked outside on the late bay display and not with the trailer queens in the basement. That's hopefully of a decent enough standard to pass muster in your eyes ...

Glad you had an enjoyable day out - it used to be far better though , real vehicles and real people .

  11. i did one year with the latebay folks when daisy was still organising stuff, yep it was a good vide. TBH i've enjoyed the last couple of yrs going with wolfsburg bus crew folks - same sort of vibe - proper owner maintained vans driven to and from the show, no trailer queens. i've got to know a few of the wbc guys now so we have a laugh hanging out. the $$ show cars inside are almost a different hobby tbh - i enjoy seeing what the top builders are producing but it has very little relevance to me, but good to get in for free and have a look. Ironically, as LB (and ear1y bay?) don't attend now i parked up where the LB space used to be- loads of room :)

Sandown has never been a cheap place to put on a show - I can remember it from my Exhibition days. But, £32 for day entry??? Ouch!!!!
