Dear All I am having a head scratching time trying to find out what is going on and remedy the problem. The van starts fine when cold, but when slightly warm or warm the thing intermittently wound not start and the only way I can get it going is (after a few attempts of trying different ways) is to put my foot flat down on the throttle and turn it over for a good 10 seconds and then it starts on 1 or 2 cylinders and then after keeping the starter on it evenly starts, and after 10 sec of running on all cyl all is smooth and well. It always starts when cold β I thought it could be some sort of air lock β odd that I blew both the breathers clear when I did the renovation β so I drilled a small hole in the filler cap and that did nothing. I think itβs a fuel thing; - it has anew carb and electronic ignition, so everything is new But any help or ideas would be most appreciated. Thanks Marc
mine does the same, I think it's probably something to do with the fuel vaporising in the hot manifolds. Dont be tempted to pump the throttle, this just floods it and youre left with cranking the think until it's cleared out. starting mine is a bit of a black art.... another thing i noticed before i adjusted the clutch cable was that it was harder to start with it in gear (foot on the clutch). this was due to the clutch not fully engaging (it was worse when everything was warm). The clutch was dragging very slightly which gave the impression that the battery was weak.
Thanks for that - its the normal standard set up - twin port If i dont put the throttle hard down - it just wont start at all! It took me 6 months of trying diff ways to get it to start! Odd or what Regards
What blue thing says, I start mine by SLOWLY pressing the pedal down then turning it over to avoid giving it more with the accelerator pump.
With mine Im sure the heat rises up through the manifold heating the carb causing the fuel to evaporate pressurising the float bowl and pushing the fuel through the main jet and into the cylinders, I have fitted a heat blocker ( 34ict Webers) and this has helped a lot.
see http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=456680 and from the manual .... I think this is normal(ish) mine does it as well always embarassing at petrol stations
This is pretty normal but it might be due to fuel dribbling through when the engine is stopped. Does the cutoff work when you stop it ? On the progressive I was advised to add a solenoid valve upstream of the carb to avoid petrol boiling out of the float chamber being replaced with fresh from the tank while it is standing hot. The one thing is not to pump it but you have to push the pedal really slowly to avoid an extra squirt of fuel.
Sorry not eurocarbs @bluething, it was fastroadcars, link below, easy fit. http://www.fastroadcars.co.uk/shop/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=100
