  1. Hello,

yeap issues again! Late Bay 1975

I have had various elec issues over the 2 years or so, new battery Nov 10, Starter Aug 11, Coil, Dist Cap, Leads Jan 12...
but a little while ago had issue with starting, i thought the radio was fault, draining power as was drawing 5amps when turned off, so disconnected......... however still have issue. Can charge the battery and for say a week of running, no radio, lights, wipers, fine after a week (10 - 12 starts) the battery is empty again.

the van is running fine, just done a 300 mile plus weekend, no alt. on (ok, comes on first thing but within a minute gone off) checked an cleaned earths, terminals etc.......

thoughts please, oh the wise of the board!

have you checked that the alternator/dynamo is actually charging the battery? sounds like you have a charging problem to me, simple test is to check battery voltage then once started check again and rev slightly - should read around 13.5 volts while running on fast idle, if not and it sits at say 12 volt - or whatever it was with the engine not running then there's the problem.

just because the alternator light goes out that doesn't mean it is working fully....also is your belt tight enough, it may be slipping, don't go mad on that though it should be loose enough to twist 90 degrees.

  4. my thoughts are alt - belt is ok... in my humble view! - i guess the cost is making me double check!

if you get stuck you are obviously close to me, we can soon test the alternator with a multi meter which i can supply, let me know.

  6. Something like this, as Ricky has already said, is usually belt, alternator, battery. First place to start.

    Is the belt tight
    Is the Alternator passing charge
Is the battery taking / holding charge or is it past it's best

he had a new battery recently sooooooo
he says the belt is tight soooooooo
i've re - read post one and he seems to say the light goes off after a minute? sooooo

alternator dodgy is my bet, voltmeter will confirm, suppose some regulator could be faulty but i'm no expert on the workings of alternators and associated gubbins, only if they are actually working or not.

  8. either batt or alternator .....or dodgy leisure battery wiring if have one .....check all wires are connected bruv ,could be simply a wire came off sumwhere down the line ?

  9. ... have checked wires...... if rain eases will get meter out at lunch.........

    thanks as always

  13. has your old alternator got a three prong plug and a box on the firewall?

  14. sounds to me like a knackered battery. They really are pants these days. If the alternator light is going out the likelihood is that this is actually working. I wouldn't call a November 2010 battery new or recent. Also, is your battery rated for your van, cheapo or good quality?

Does the van get daily use, was it used on a very regular basis through the 2 really harsh winters we had in 2010/2011? If not you won't have been giving it sufficient charge and its probably FUBAR
    :)

  15. Joker..... interesting..... was an Halfords item, rated as the one in the van when we got!

she is my daily ride and we braved the past two winters!

    keep you posted!

  16. Up- date

    battery has 13.25v

tick over reading up to 14.20 (average)

lights / wipers on down to 9.90 (average)

    - did the battery test and then started up - first turn, but stalled.... then up on trying to re-start had nothing.... just the starter clicking, 6, 7 8 turns and fired up........

so, does this shed any further light on the issue!

try corroded battery terminals, bad earth or loose wiring to starter

yeah sounds like the alternator is working then so i would go with cleaning all the big thick wires on the battery to the starter terminal for now and keep trying also try using a different battery off the car or summat if it fits to see if it's dud.

  19. Nov 2010 for the battery from halfords? Should still be under warranty...double check to see if you still have the receipt.

  20. Friday up-date......

started fine this morning, travelled to work (18 miles) with lights on, radio on and checked battery and 13.25 v

so am sure not Alt, Battery..... even earthing.... so starter motor issue is looking fav?!?!?!
