Kidderminster in Worcestershire. More specifically The Croft on Sutton park road. I once moved to New Milton for a year and came home to Kiddy. Haven’t really lived much more than half a mile from where I was born. Apart from new Milton and a halcyon 15 years in the family town of Bewdley in Worcestershire which is only a couple of miles away. All my other abodes have been in and around the Blakebrooke area of kiddy. I even went to all my schools in that half mile. I’m just a local yokel really! Has your life journey been any more exotic?
Mum and Dad came over from Derry when Mum was pregnant with me. When I was born, the hospital was in the District of Meriden - the centre of England. Marston Green is now part of Solihull. Apprently Marston Green Maternity hospital was the largest in the UK in the late 60s/early 70s. Ozzy Osbourne was also born there. I don't remember, but I lived not far away in Stetchford for the first few months before living in bohemain Mosleley till I was 5. I moved to Selly Oak and now I'm still not that faraway in another bit of South Birmingham. Definitely not been exotic.
Sunny Morecambe, we’re known as ‘sand grown uns’ The hospital has been knocked down and a police station built across the road to make sure it can’t happen again. I once had this conversation with multiple TT winner John McGuinness who was born in the same hospital.
They turned my birth hospital into a Psychiatric place before also knocking it down - I think half of Brum was born there
Sheffield. When I was born my mum,dad and two older sisters ( the younger one was 20 years old) lived in rooms at my aunts house just off City Road. My aunt ( mum's sister) said "now he's come along there's not enough room for you all, you will have to find somewhere else...the girls can stay though ( they were both working and doing house work), both my sisters said " if he is going then so are we " so off we all went. Never did like that aunt.
Me too. Highcroft Hall in Erdington. Being 1946, the maternity hospitals were all overrun. So they annexed part of Highcroft. I think that’s the story anyway. Spent my first 3-4 years living at my nans house in Church Road Erdinton. Then moved to a maisonette in Downsfield Road in Sheldon. Think we were there 2-3 years, then moved to a brand new council house on the edge of Castle Bromwich, where me and my brothers and sister all grew up. I married aged 25 and bought a new semi detached house in Brereton, just outside Rugely. 6 years later we moved back to Brum (Chelmsley Wood) Five years later, after divorce, I moved into a housing association flat in Sutton Coldfield with my soon to be second wife. Soon moved just up the road to a three bed semi, still Housing Association which we later bought under the right to buy scheme. We were there for 33 years, until we uprooted to Barry, South Wales. No intention of ever moving again.
Mighty Leeds, St Marys hospital on the Armley/Bramley border - think there's a blue plaque there now..... Moved across to Chapel Allerton when I was about 12 but still schooled in the area then marriage raised its ugly head and moved out to Guiseley . Divorce followed shortly afterwards and a new job took me over to Scarborough. Back to Leeds 7 years later for a better job which is where I stayed until 2012 when London called .. I was born in Southampton General and lived in Shirley until I was about 4 years old, then Totton and Ashurst for thirty years before moving to Banchory near Aberdeen for another thirty years to work in the oil industry. Now living near Lyon in France since giving up the work malarky.
I wouldn’t still be here if I didn’t enjoy it. I’m just back from a couple of weeks in the UK, I crossed the channel from Caen to Portsmouth and the customs chap wanted to know where I was going, and why I should return from Hull instead of Newcastle. I had no problem telling him where I was going but it wasn’t his business to tell me where I should return from. I drove from Portsmouth to just north of Aberdeen, it was raining, there were pot holes everywhere and floods everywhere. The roads were busy, smart motorways are not smart and campsites are expensive.
I do enjoy driving in the France not in Paris or Marseille or the other big cities, but most other places are a pleasure in my experience!
Being a bit more positive, the beer is good, as long as it isn’t ice cold or lager, and so are the fish and chips.
At number 2 Banbury Lane in a village called Rothersthorpe. If you know junction 15a on the M1 it's about 4 fields away as the crow flies, the service station there is now called Northampton services but when it originally opened about 45 years ago it was called Rothersthorpe services. I spent many an hour down there as a youth playing Space Invaders and a bit later it was the nearest place to get something to eat after a session in the village pub (The Chequers, now sadly closed).
One of my craziest driving experiences was the Paris ring road in my T25. The road doesn't follow a big dual carriageway, it's from one lane to another all over bloody place.
