Window pain

  1. Hi guys I see this is a popular cause of concern for people... So hate to repeat what others have said before me but:-

Spent all day trying to get 3 windows in and failed.... Bus 3 me 0.....

Am not sure what technique to use... I have brand new seals from heritage for a 72 so should be the right size but the top won't go in, then when I force the top the bottom comes out.... It's so frustrating

Anyhow if anyone could shine some light on it for me or wants to come to the forest of dean and earn some money I would be more than happy to listen....

Thanks guys, I always feel better after listening to you peops on tlb

  2. I helped my dad fit his beetle windows, the technic we used was picture frame string, him putting all his weight against the windows on the outside (and at times punching the windows  ) While I pulled the string through on the inside.

For the stubborn windscreen there were 2 of us leaning on the outside on ladders so we could get our full weight behind us. One leaning on the top of the window and the other leaning on the bottom ss we had the same popping out issue. Abit of bad language later and it seemed to work.

Are you talking factory microbus windows or panel van conversion windows?

  4. Original microbus windows

  5. I found mine to be a nightmare to put back in! Could've sworn they'd expanded while sitting around! I used a drop of washing up liquid and the string/ rope technique and with the extra lubrication thy went in a treat. Sure I'm gonna get ribbed about the washing up liquid as sure someone said not to use it?!

I did my windscreen with Fairy, then took it out for the headlining to be fitted and all the Fairy was laying behind the seal. It is water based, so not recommended. :( I cleaned it up and used WD40...probably also not recommended ;D

Only my tailgate and slider have "proper" windows, these were easy. Try a conversion window

There are a few tips somewhere for fitting glass...I just can't remember where.

I used the plastic wire that comes from a strimmer, it's very tough and don't cut into the rubber. (Helped by VWFish)

I use waxoyle or ankor wax as a lubricant.

  9. The problem I have is the window doesn't seem to go in far enough to start using the string?? Unless you use it for something other than pulling the rubber over??

We hammered pounded and pushed but could not get it to pop into the window frame :-

How does the glass size compare to the opening size with no rubber on it?

  11. The glass is the original that came out..... I am thinking I might need completely different seals, although mine say they are for my bay....

    Any recommendations??

  12. Had same problem with my windows. Needed another pairs of hands and lots of silicone spray. Get a friend to hold in place as you pull string etc. Took many attempts and huge amount of force (you WONT break the glass). To get the last corner in I resorted to a club hammer and a lump of 2 by2 timber and bashing the seal.

All in and no breaks (didn't do 'screen though). Also, warm seals in a big bucket of hot water to make them more pliable.

    Good luck ;)

  13. Thanks will try that.... Think warming them might help...not tried that.....

I really appreciate all the help guys, I am putting the matches down and the voices are slowly subsiding

  14. Can't find the thread, might be worth pm'ing him?

  15. Zed

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

Sometimes they are tight, but they WILL go in. As suggested above I've had the bottom and both sides of a side window in and the top bowing out 2" without it breaking but tap the edge and it'll shatter. ;) Toughened glass.
The windscreen is another matter, don't bend this or it'll crack. Laminated glass.

The best tip I ever had is to make an extra loop opposite the ends and get top and bottom in together starting bang in the middle.

  16. Sorry zed just to clarify ..... Put 2 loops of rope.. 1 ending top and 1 bottom... Then line up window and push from middle to pop in...

    :)

  17. So they actually trimmed the seals?? Is that an option..?? Good
    /bad??

Try again before even thinking about trimming your new seals. C:) I think with Zed's tip and warming them up in water you will get them in. Once you get one in you'll wonder what the fuss was about!

  19. Lol.... I really hope so silver ;) thanks...

Right where's my glass hammer ??
