Wiring problems! What goes where?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by ##mike##, Sep 18, 2011.

  1. Hi all,
Right the story goes... I blew the engine in my 2lt 1979 bay some years ago... Only recently have I had the funds and time to get it back on the road!
So I have sourced a replacement engine (out a 1982 T25) and have managed to change all the ancillaries and mount the engine.
However I was not the one that originally removed the old engine and have never taken on such a job before. Therefore I have a bunch of wires, leads, pipes and lines of which I don’t know which order or where they go!! Please if anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated

    1st question
Brown wire exiting the vacuum unit?

    2nd
Red wire out of the carb (left carb when facing the engine from the engine lid)?

    3rd
This line was hanging down from the top of the engine bay… After the split they head up to the air the intakes

What should be connected to the coil terminals? (I'm in processes of sourcing the correct wiring diagram... Does anyone know where I can find a good diagram for the 1979 bay and the 1982 T25?

Splits from the alternator lead as it enters the engine bay? I'm guessing this goes to the positive battery terminal?

Red wire enters from the front of the engine bay? The black one that enters with it is connected to the negative battery terminal

Grey wire exiting the voltage regulator?

After stripping this back it seams it was original a dark blue colour but was cut, see the new picture

hi mike welcome, your photo links don't work for me either mate

  3. Thanks guys,

I have modified the links, hopefully work fine now

    Cheers Mike

  4. Hi

there is a picture of the starter ,all the terminals go onto the thread except the spade which goes on either spade [thats the starter]..

A picture of a wire that goes from the cylinder thing on your carbe goes to positive side of your coil...only thing on the negative side of your coil from your dizzy...

you also need to find a positive wire leading from your ignition to go on the pos of the coil

  5. to put pictures here you need to select the bottom code ,it says img code...

this block looks like it goes onto you alternator

this wire look to big to go anywhere but your battery positive

black wire should be either posssitive to the coli or feed back to the reverse lights, eithe way should be on the possitive side of the coil

the pipe of the inlet could be to the servo if you have one

  11. Wow this is GREAT!
Thank you all! I was beginning to get demotivated with this engine replacement!
One other question I missed of the original thread is this pipe off the lower carb I cant see anything obvious on the air filter.

    see link

Sorry i still cant work out how to up load photos...

    Thanks again Mike

This is the balance pipe/servo pipe from the inlet manifold(lower carb) and should go to a matching port below the other carb, and where it tee's off it should go to the brake servo if you have one through the a one way valve.

  13. P.S. if you dont have a brake servo plug off the pipe, any air leaks from round there will cause backfiring if it starts at all.

  14. Thanks again!
I have yet to find a brake servo in the parts but I will kick off a further investigation on the weekend. I am guessing as the engine has the pipe then I should have a servo? Will I cause problems if I was to block it off?

Sorry for so many nieve questions! I'm learning all the way... :)

your servo if you have one is under the van near the front, and if you don't have one then block that pipe like majorhangover says or it'll run crap.

  16. Well at last! And thanks to every ones amazing help I think I nearly have everything connected :)
    Just one last question...
I understand the the dizzy is the only wire connected to the negative on the coil? However the dizzy on on my engine doesn't have any thin wires leaving it. It does have a black connector block on one side (see the image)
    http://s1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd404/mbcolton/?action=view&current=P1010877.jpg
I am guessing this is the connector that should connect to the dizzy negative? Unfortunately my engine did not come with the wire or connecting block to it...
Can anyone confirm if this is the correct wire and if there is anywhere I can get a replacement from or any advise on bodging something that will work?

    Thanks Mike

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

Your T25 engine comes equipped with electronic ignition rather than points so there are two connections. I believe you're best with the original wiring though I can't see why. Perhaps there is a signal amplifier. Be warned that certainly with a pertronix elec ignition - wire it the wrong way and it's toast.

Sorry can't be more help. Paul Weeding would know.

  18. As Zed said, if it's original Bosch electronic ignition, you'll need to plug the dissy into the ignition amplier that's the other end of the setup. Have you got the amp?
