Gear selection problems

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by kiddy12, Dec 1, 2015.

  1. Hi there while out driving a couple of weeks ago I lost 1st and second gear .
I slackened of the two bolts on the lever but even with them slack couldn't find first and the gear stick seems dead slack.
I looked under the van and the front and bush seem fine
Anyway I have ordered a front and back bush and will replace them
They were last replaced 2010 is 5 years enough time for them to perish and will this sort my problems
    It's a 76 bay and I'm a total newbie to all this
    Thanks

Unlikely just the bushes, check the cup and pin at the bottom of the gearstick and the linkage at the back end of the rod near the gearbox for a start.
Pictures always help,if you've got an iPhone or whatever I'd recommend you get the Tapatalk app to make putting pics on here dead simple straight from your phone camera!

  3. I had this on the way back from Bristol. It was the clutch cable. There is a wing nut that needed tightening. Job done. Try it.

  4. Wow didn't think it would be clutch related
I'll try that first thanks as I said the bushes look in decent nick

  5. Flakey what am I looking for in the cup ?

There's a slot in the cup that wears and gets bigger while the pin gets a groove in it resulting in a sloppy gearstick!

  7. ^^^ Check the clutch operation first of all ..
Gear selection is usually a problem if the cable is on its way out or needs adjustment on the wing nut. You may have opened a whole new can of worms by messing with the gearstick adjustment - hopefully not though.
    Good luck

  8. Haha hope not I'll try the clutch first cheers

Sounds like clutch cable to me too.

I'd go for the 2 parts of the rear coupling that should be peened together swivelling free-ish. Common with replacement couplings. A couple of spot welds will fix, or a couple of your new to prevent. If that's what it is.

  11. What I did and worked for me was to put the bus in second gear, loosen the 2 bolts a fair bit, hold the stick tight into 2nd and then tighten the two bolts.
Tighten wing nut 2 turns at a time. Was like a new bus after. Maybe I was lucky?

  12. Ok I tightened clutch cable and pedal now the pedal feels tighter
However it's made no difference to the gear selection
Also when I went to check my phone to see what way the plate under the gear stick goes the photos too dark
What way around does it go? Is it big bit to the right ?
I also checked the d bush at the gearbox end and it seems quite solid
I can't put it in second cause even when it's loose it's like it's not even there
What should I try next guys? Was gonna change the front bush and the d bush at the gear linkage anyway even though they look fine

If you messed about with the shifter base not knowing what gear it was in, you might have to make a load of fine adjustments on the 2 bolts to get it right again.

  14. Yep I've now got no clue what gear it's in

When your linkage stuff and gearbox internals aren't too worn, you just bolt it on and off you go. The only adjustment built into the parts is for and aft to save you punching the dash.

The little ball / donut in the gearbox nose may have worn out. Cheap part but time consuming to replace.

You can tell if its the linkage outside the box by making sure the shift coupler on the gearbox shifter shaft is properly clamped to the gearbox shaft and then you can try pushing pulling and rotating the coupler. You should be able to feel it clicking into each gear.

  20. Ok so changed the front bush and back d shaped bush but still no joy in locating 1st and second played about with the stop. Plate and got 3rd 4th and reverse but no 1 and 2
What do you suggest my next plan of attack is ?
