It doesnt help that the key is worn to about halfway between a number 3 and a number 2 size.

My numbers are upside down, my technical terms are wrong, I'm off to make a starter motor bushing out of dried carrot and turkey fat.

Ps. Drove my bus to Herne Bay.. its like the 1980s again.. driving in the left hand lane of the M25 at 65-70mph.. no trucks.... apart from having to orbit several Fiesta driving plonkers sitting in the middle lane at 65mph.

Used to do 80 mph in the left hand lane back in 1980's in a Marina and never have to overtake anyone at 8pm on a Sunday night.
Friend with an XR2i used to complain about the sharpness of the corners on the M25 at 110-120mph

Overtaking was a risky manoeuvre in a Marina. Well, so was driving really! I remember averaging 110mph in an alfasud on the first bit of the M25 I recall from the M23 round to cater ham. No one really cared much back then did they!

My Marina was special. The carpet used to wrap itself around the joint in the steering column just above the floor so it would not turn right.
So pulling over a lane consisted of turning the wheel hard enough to snap the carpet strands which would go with a bang.. then correcting hard to miss the Armco.. one tyre yelp on the start of the manouver and another as you missed the Armco..
When the front brakes went on it would pull very hard to the left then straighten up as you pushed the disc onto the jammed brake pad.

But having a car got me a girlfriend...and 31 years on we are still married.

That reminds me... a friend of mine used to have a girlfriend who I'm sure was named after the place she was conceived - she was called Marina...!

I had a girlfriend called Marina. That earned her the enviable nickname ‘Morris’.
Needless to say we didn’t last long! I still call her that though!

Still solid under there and it looks like i didn't manage to damage anything else apart from the cover.

Yesterday .. Washed bus underneath .. Engine out. Head off number 1/2 side. Lapped valves. . Picture in other thread.
Broke heat exchanger flap so took it apart redid my dodgy welds .. not enough heat last time.
Still to do end float tweak..
Today Changed wiper arms for ones with real springs
Took off 3/4 cylinder head. Managed to lap one cylinders worth of valves.

Wire brushed then kurusted and stone chip painted bottom side of tinware which needed doing.

Too dark too cold went in.

Couple of items fitted today :-

    • fitted a rather tatty belly pan / pedal cover (got my eye open for a better one, though this will do for now)

    • fitted 2 out of the 3 drop gates. The 3rd (drivers side) still needs a bit of work. I bought these in the summer from a guy only 10 miles away. His bay lived outside and had rusted away badly and he sold the salvageable bits on eBay. He didn’t mention it was a crew cab in the ad but I could see what it was in a couple of the pics. A stroke of luck for me. They’re not perfect but hey, it’s a commercial and not a true pick up without its gates on.

I really am struggling to find excuses not to pull the engine now. It’s needs to come out for a clean, a service and to fit the tinware.

If it’s going to Volksworld in March it needs to be MoT’d in January 2018 so I can send all the docs off to DVLA.

Like the way you underplayed ‘engine out’

I’ve been putting this job off (read ‘bottling it’)
    for a while.

I know the theory, read the manuals and have the tools. Got to get my mojo on.

Went to Marwell Zoo so only had time to cut the end off the heat exchanger exhaust tail pipe and swap it round 180 degrees to buy a bit more time on it as the metal tubing has half rusted away so clamps do not seal onto it.
While the bit that slots in the silencer is protected from rot by the silencer.
Now the exhaust clamp will grip a cleanish bit of metal.

Serves me right for buying secondhand rusty heat exchangers...

  15. Did you use a puller to remove the old wiper arms, if so which one fits these buses?

  16. Just back in from giving it a good wash off, was *******ing down and windy, at least the bus is clean.

Finished lapping valves today. Cleaned up and torqued down one head.
Changed the flywheel oil seal and checked the shims to see if I could reduce the endfloat, and managed to make the stack 0.04mm thicker..
Then it hailed hard and I gave up.
