Unfortunately just rather loud "HX not sealed to head properly" noises. As the cam needs running in for 20 mins and it was time for @sANDYbAY 's tea time nap, we called it a day.

  5. Bummer = not a nice noise then!

I tried ordering new copper washers this morning before work but everybody's shut until Monday.

Unaccustomed as I am to public speaking I would still like to take this opportunity to thank @zed for his invaluable assistance with my engine. I would particularly like to express my gratitude for his timely introduction to the black art of camshaft hardening. This was a subject I knew nothing about and left to my own devices I would have started my engine and let it idle for a good while to allow it to settle in and get comfortable with all it's new components.

Thanks to Zed (and, I must admit, a call to my engine builder, just to confirm) plus research on the web I now realise that letting it idle when it's first started would have been the worst thing I could have done, would actually have seriously shortened the life of my new engine.

So, in conclusion, I'm seriously impressed with Zed and seriously unimpressed with my engine builder who didn't see fit to mention it until I asked him.

  7. VW didn't, and I would assume that it could affect balance, and airflow!! :)

Not only that, paint has a habit of not staying on aluminium!!

  8. I gave mine a light grit blasting to clean it up then some clear acrylic laquer from an aerosol - the sort used for clear coating silver painted alloy wheels. Says it's good directly on aluminium. It's worked well.
