  3. Apparently Yanks arent fantastically toterant at having the ******* taken out of them either! As Ive already mentioned I love the Merkin people and even find New Yorkers have their charm.

Merkins are very welcome and also welcome to take the ******* out of the Brits (Limeys is it). Wish they had invaded Canada in a way and won. We live in the 51st state anyway as our government are poodles to Merkin foreign policy and anyway would have been handy actually having a bill of rights to fall back on!

Anyway come back - forgive and forget and give as good as you get. Wheres yer spirit! There just a bunch of limey sops (me too)

I've got to admit I thought he was having a giraffe too.
Who said yanks have no sense of humour....

  10. I like America & most Americans I've met are great. The problem is that's its such a big country that there will be a lot of tossers. Percentage wise its probably the same as the UK believe me I've met some right top shelf fools over here (not all of them Welsh lol) As we live so far away we will never hear about the normal ones only the extremes. :)

  11. We have a Bill of Rights, it was created in 1689, almost a century before the colonists declared Independence, they copied us, we didn't copy them.

  12. Just for the sake of it, here's a precise of the Bill of Rights 1689

The Bill of Rights laid out certain basic rights for people (at the time) all Englishmen. The Act set out that there should be:

    • no royal interference with the law. Though the sovereign remains the fount of justice, he or she cannot unilaterally establish new courts or act as a judge.
    • no taxation by Royal Prerogative. The agreement of the parliament became necessary for the implementation of any new taxes
    • freedom to petition the monarch without fear of retribution
    • no standing army may be maintained during a time of peace without the consent of parliament.[7]
    • no royal interference in the freedom of the people to have arms for their own defence as suitable to their class and as allowed by law (simultaneously restoring rights previously taken from Protestants by James II)
    • no royal interference in the election of members of parliament
    • the freedom of speech and debates or proceedings in Parliament ought not to be impeached or questioned in any court or place out of Parliament
    • "grants and promises of fines or forfeitures" before conviction are void
    • no excessive bail or "cruel and unusual" punishments may be imposed
Certain acts of James II were also specifically named and declared illegal by the Bill of Rights, while James' flight from England in the wake of the Glorious Revolution was also declared to be an abdication of the throne.

Also, in a prelude to the Act of Settlement to come twelve years later, the Bill of Rights barred Roman Catholics from the throne of England as "it hath been found by experience that it is inconsistent with the safety and welfare of this Protestant kingdom to be governed by a papist prince"; thus William III and Mary II were named as the successors of James VII and II and that the throne would pass from them first to Mary's heirs, then to her sister, Princess Anne of Denmark and her heirs and, further, to any heirs of William by a later marriage. The monarch was further required to swear a coronation oath to maintain the Protestant religion.

  13. Yep its obviously at the forefront of every Englishman's mind. Just like we all know the words to the national anthem!

  14. Great dollar prices on bus parts.

  15. Same here.

  16. @damagedduck

    Calm down, calm down.

As I said in my post I love the USA, I'd move there given the chance, so I hope your reply is actually a wind-up too and not a genuine response that you've been offended.
    :)

  17. Can see how Americans get the impression we think were superior.
Always thought Vdubbers were live and let live :(

  18. In my naieve youth and as Im a bit of a woolly-back I used to assume that people who i thought were like me actually would be and was very trusting and then you got rallies, festivals and the likes and people "like you" nick or trash your stuff and you realise just cos they are into the same stuff as you it doesnt make them like you or even people you might want to know. Long winded way of saying there are arseholes in every walk of life, passtime.

Where am I going with this, oh yes, we arent all live and let live but we probably should aspire to be so.

We are inextricablytied to the yanks because of our history whether we wish to be so or not and that, I believe , gives people the right to comment on our american brethrin. Also looking at the US is like looking into a portal of what our future will be like. We have the benfit of contemperaneous hindsight and can moderate what we do or even comment on a trend before it develops.

  19. I think I might be a tad upset if the UK was judged on the basis of the Jeremy Kyle Show or East Enders or even Hollyoaks.

  20. Anyone who gets genuinely upset by what they have read on a forum which is not directed straight at them (I haven't read anywhere that anyone has been singled out?) probably should buy some land and build themselves a doomsday castle (on National Geographic channel this weekend)
